A Little Princess is a children's novel by Frances Hodgson


Burnett, first published as a book in 1905. It is an
expanded version of the short story "Sara Crewe: or,
What Happened at Miss Minchin's", which was serialized
in St. Nicholas Magazine from December 1887, and
published in book form in 1888. According to Burnett,
after she composed the 1902 play A Little Un-Fairy
Princess based on that story, her publisher asked that she
expand the story as a novel with "the things and people
that had been left out before". The novel was published by
Charles Scribner's Sons (also publisher of St. Nicholas)
with illustrations by Ethel Franklin Betts and the full title
A Little Princess: Being the Whole Story of Sara Crewe
Now Being Told for the First Time.

Based on a 2007 online poll, the U.S. National Education


Association listed the book as one of its "Teachers' Top
100 Books for Children". In 2012 it was ranked number
56 among all-time children's novels in a survey published
by School Library Journal, a monthly with primarily U.S.
audience. It was the second of two Burnett novels among
the Top 100, with The Secret Garden number 15.

The novel seems to have been partly inspired by Charlotte
Bront's unfinished novel Emma, the first two chapters of
which were published in the Cornhill Review in 1860,
about a wealthy heiress with a past. mysteriously
seemingly abandoned at a boarding school.

Little Sara Crewe must say goodbye to her beloved
childhood home in India when her rich father is called to
the battlefields of the British army during World War I.

to live in the attic with Becky.

Meanwhile, elderly neighbor Charles Randolph received


news that his son John was missing in battle. He was
called in to identify a soldier with amnesia but was
disappointed to learn that it was not his son. His Indian
assistant Ram Dass kept accepting him anyway and
maybe he might learn something about his son.

The Little Princess is a 1995 film directed by Alfonso


Cuarón and starring Liesel Matthews, Eleanor Bron, Liam
Cunningham and Vanessa Lee Chester.

Set during World War I, the content revolves around the


miserable life of little Sara Crewe at Miss Minchin's
boarding school in New York after receiving news that
her father died in a battle. . Because it is based on the
novel of the same name by female writer Frances
Hodgson Burnett, the script is still influenced by the 1939
movie version of The Little Princess and many innovative
innovations compared to the original story.

Although only Warner Bros. Poorly promoted, and made


with only half the budget, the film received critical
acclaim and won numerous accolades including two
Academy Award nominations for its remarkable
achievements in terms of cinematography. art direction

Liesel Matthews as Sara Crewe: She is sent to attend Miss
Minchin's boarding school when her father has to go to
war. The smart, polite, kind girl is known as a storyteller
and a princess here.
Eleanor Bron as Principal Minchin, the cruel and selfish
woman who makes Sara work as a servant and tries to
prove to her that she is no longer a princess after her
father's death but later she Minchin was fired and became
a chimney sweep. She is her older sister Amelia.
