A hyperbola is one of the conic sections that most students have not encountered

formally before, unlike circles and parabolas. We seldom see a hyperbola in daily
life, and it seldom appears in decoration or design. In spite of this, it has
interesting properties and important applications. Hyperbolas are important in
astronomy as they are the paths followed by non-recurrent comets. A guitar is a
real world example of a hyperbola because of its sides and how it’s curved going
outwards just like a hyperbola. This is a significance example for our world
because for the people who learn to play a guitar it’s easier to grip because of
the way its shaped like a hyperbola. A lampshade is another real world example of a
hyperbola because of the way the sides are curved on both sides it’s curved just
like a hyperbola. This is a significance for our world because the shape of the
lampshade when it’s shaped like a hyperbola makes the light wider.
What would happen if you pulled the two foci of an ellipse so far apart that they
moved outside the ellipse? The result would be a hyperbola, another conic section.
The equations of the ellipse and the hyperbola differ in the operations of their x2
and y2. In an ellipse, the operation is addition, while in a hyperbola, the
operation is subtraction.
