GREEN INITIATIVES TOWARDS

SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT
Green Campus Initiatives by Prince Shri Venkateshwara
Padmavathy Engineering College
Best Practice – Academic year 2015-2016
A Green Campus is a place where environmental friendly practices and education combine
to promote sustainable and eco-friendly practices in the campus. The green campus concept
offers an institution the opportunity to take the lead in redefining its environmental culture
and developing new paradigms by creating sustainable solutions to environmental, social
and economic needs of the mankind.

Internal Quality Assurance Cell along with ECO Club initiated the awareness and education
on the importance of sustainable environment. Various measures were taken to transfer the
campus into a “GREENVIRONMENT”.

Vision of ECO club

Go Green and Preserve Green - To create a student community that values, admires and
respect nature.

Mission of ECO club

 To ensure judicious use of Natural Resources

 To Protect the Natural Resources around us
 Educate the students about various conservation techniques
 Promote 3R principle among the student community
 To maintain Clean and Green Campus

Rain water Harvesting

Rooftop rainwater harvesting system is installed in the campus which comprises of pipes to
transport rainwater from the roof top and recharge pits to replenish the ground water. 20
collection points with recharge pits are installed in the campus.

There are many water bodies in and around Ponmar in which water is available throughout
the year. The college campus has three open wells, which serves the water demand
throughout the year. Recharging the ground water aquifer has become important and
considering this, the Institution has installed simple but very effective rain water harvesting
system in the campus. The objective was to sustain the ground water table which was found
to be very effective by the recharge pits.

Utilisation

Artificial recharge to groundwater: The recharge pits installed in the campus allows the
rainwater to replenish groundwater by recharging the underground aquifers. Installation of
the rain water harvesting system in the campus has increased the water infiltration rate,
which was observed through the following:

 No drying up of the three wells in the campus

 No water crisis experienced so far, even when there was water scarcity in nearby
areas

Rain water collected in the roof and the floors

flows down the pipes running down the
lengths of the building into the recharge pits.

The recharge pits are lined with brick walls and the water reaching the pits trickles down the
layer of sand, pebbles and boulders which enhances the underground filtration.

Solar Power Plant

A solar power plant was initiated during 2015-2016, to meet out the power requirements.

Installed capacity in kW 4
Energy generation units / day for 4kWP 18
Energy saving by solar / six month 3780 kWh
Cost saving by Solar in INR 33403.86

Use of LEDs
The main objective of the conversion of LEDs is to provide better lighting through reduced
operating costs and reduced energy consumption. Because of their superior energy
efficiency over more traditional lighting systems, LED lighting allows us to save substantial
amounts of operating and maintenance costs.

Energy and cost savings by LED lighting products

Energy savings by LED / year – 35350.5 KWh

Cost savings by LED / year – Rs. 255330.61

ECO Club activities

 All Students, Faculty and Staffs are aware of how important it is

to keep our environment pollution free and green.
 We at PSVPEC also try to create awareness to the nearby
communities. We organise tree plantation camps, promotion of
herbal garden, etc. by the involvement of the people in the
nearby villages.
 We create awareness about the hazards of usage of plastic.
 Increased support for conservation activities.
 Quality of air and water improved in the campus.
 Promotion of environmental education and increased awareness
among all stakeholders.
