History Tradition of Excellence

• The impact of the first Sputnik launch (Stunned by

the Soviet Union’s achievement) on the American
educational system cannot be overstated.
• US government responded by pouring billions of
dollars into science education
• The goal was to produce a bumper crop of young
adults in STEM careers rather than to improve
science education for students whose academic
interests lay outside of these disciplines
• National Science Foundation mulai menggunakan
singkatan SMET sebagai cikal bakal istilah STEM
sekitar awal tahun 1990an di Amerika.
Pengertian STEM Education Tradition of Excellence

• STEM education is a very broad term; a simple definition refers to teaching and
learning about STEM subjects in various ways (Bybee, 2013; Chesky & Wolfmeyer,
2015).
• More complex define refers to an interdisciplinary teaching approach or method
that integrates some or all of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and
other knowledge, skills, and beliefs particular to these disciplines (Baran, Bilici,
Mesutoglu, & Ocak, 2016; Chesky & Wolfmeyer, 2015).
• STEM education refers to teaching and learning in a STEM subject, which
emphasizes problem solving with real-world problems involving many disciplines
and other skills such as science, technology, mathematics, and engineering by an
integrated way (Martín-Páez, Aguilera, Perales-Palacios, Vitchez-González, 2019).
