8 Warsaw grads entering military service
Joseph Cooke plans career
serving his country
Joseph Cooke, the sev-
enth-ranked member of the
Warsaw Central School
2021 graduating class, has
enlisted in the United States
Army.
He is one of eight War-
saw students who are enter-
ing military service.
Joseph will train at Fort
Benning, Ga., as a member
of the infantry. He plans
to spend his career serving
his country, and hopes to
become a police officer one
day.
During his tenure at War-
saw, Joseph was a member
of Trap Club and National
Honor Society.
While attending the Crim-
inal Justice program at the
Mount Morris Career and
Technical Education Center,
Joseph was the honor guard
sergeant and class lieuten-
ant.
Mount Morris grad wants to make
world better through her service
Mary Rose Cautivo,
daughter of Rosalina Cau-
tivo, is a 2021 graduate
of Mount Morris Central
School. Mary Rose will join
the Marines following gradu-
ation and pursue her love of
public service.
Mary Rose enlisted in the
Military in July 2020 and
trained consistently through-
out her senior year of high
school.
“The military has
always been a childhood
dream for me. Not only does
the Marine Corps allow me
to follow my career path-
way, but it also enables me
to make the world a better
place. I truly look forward
to serving my country,” she
said.
“Throughout my fam-
ily, we have served various
branches of the military,” she
said. “My brother is also in
the Marine Corps Reserve.
I ended up choosing the
Marine Corps after attend-
ing a training session with
my brother and one of our
friends, Ryan. This resulted
in me having a great conver-
sation with the recruiter. Last
July, I ended up enlisting in
the delayed entry program
and will officially begin in
August.
“I plan on completing at
least four years of active
duty, but I’m open to possi-
bly serving more,” she said.

Evan Olsheski, the son
of Paul Olsheski of Avon,
and Brandy and Joe Finoc-
chario, of Livonia is going
into the United States Air
Force following his June
graduation from Livonia
Middle High School.
Evan was a member of
the varsity cross country,
track and field, and swim
teams.
Evan graduated magna
cum laude with an advanced
regents diploma.
During his time in the Air
Force Evan plans on study-
ing environmental engineer-
ing.
Evan comes from a fam-
ily of veterans who has
proudly served in several
branches of the military.
His great-grandfather, Earl
Bradshaw served in the
United States Army and
fought in the Korean War.
He is a recipient of the
Purple Heart medal. Evan’s

their country this summer.
Quintin Betances has enlist-
ed in the Marine Corps and
Tess Barone is joining the Air
National Guard.
“The reason I wanted to enlist
in the Marine Corps was to
serve and protect my country,”
said Quintin, whose military
operations specialty is motor
transport.
“I plan to use my leadership
skills and self determination
during my four-year enlistment
and hope to climb through the
ranks and show my love for the
Marine Corps and my country,”
he said. “I’ve wanted to be a
police officer since I was little
and whether I choose a 20-year
career in the Marines or not,
the skills I learn while enlisted
will no doubt help me in my
future law enforcement career.

In Pembroke, service honors family Notre Dame grad

Two members of the Pem-
broke Central School Class of
2021 depart Aug. 16 for basic
training.
Brandon Florian will be
leaving for Marine Corps
boot camp at Parris Island,
S.C. He will be there for 15
weeks in the infantry division.
Brandon received a promo-
tion prior to boot camp to pri-
vate first class as he recruited
Garrett Totten and Kyle
Young. (Kyle was a former
Pembroke student who trans-
ferred to St. Mary’s to play
hockey). Brandon and Garrett
are also cousins. All three
boys will be leaving together
on the 16th.
During Brandon’s senior
year he excelled at football.
His career highlights were his
two defensive touchdowns
against Holley and four sacks
in a come-from-behind win
against Perry in the semifinals
game which saw Pembroke
advance to the sectional
finals.
He received the 2021 Sec-
tion V All-League Player
Award; 2021 Football Citi-
zenship Award; 2021 United
States Marine Corps Athletic
Award. He also received the
First Responder’s Award and
Dawn Krol Memorial Award
with Scholarship at the Senior
Banquet.
Brandon’s great uncle is
Clarence J. “CJ” Hall who
graduated from Pembroke
Central School and was killed
in Vietnam.
Brandon’s uncle Terry Flo-
rian, also a Pembroke Central
School graduate, retired from
the United States Air Force.
Brandon has been going
to physical training at the
Marine Recruiters office for
the last two years. He also
belongs to the Corfu Volun-
teer Fire Department, joining
when he was 16 years old.
Garrett Mark Totten, 17, of
Corfu is a 2021 graduate of
Pembroke Junior Senior High
School. He has chosen to

“I am 18 years old and
graduated from Letchworth
Central School.
“My hometown is the
small town of Pike. My
whole life I have grown up
farming and carrying on the
long standing tradition of
Van Slyke farming in Pike. I
played soccer, football, wres-
tling, hockey, and baseball
for my school and clubs.
“Throughout my years
here at Letchworth and on
the farm I have encountered
many hardships and over-
came them. I have developed
a sense of hard work and
integrity and I have learned
to let nothing stand in my
way of achieving greatness.
Growing up on a farm made
me “farm tough” and gave
me determination – although
some just call it plain stub-
bornness. These qualities that
I have gained over the years
makes me believe that the

make a career of service in the Marine Corps

tions Command (MARSOC).
“I’m going in as infan-
try, and I’m going to go to
RECON and Force RECON,
and then I’m going to try for
MARSOC,” he said.
As for why he decided to
make a career out of the mili-
tary, he said while college is
important it’s like high school
and its boring. As a member
of the Marines he can travel
the world and learn differ-
ent things the average person
doesn’t get to learn.

said. “So I feel obligated to

before me, and give my time

the United States Air Force
Reserves.
Chloe is the daughter of
Erik and Kristin Guild and
Christopher Stinson. Chloe’s
grandfather and aunt were in
the military, and she felt it
was a good fit for her.
She plans on attending
Genesee Community College
in January for health studies
and to pursue nursing.
Chloe was an athlete in
high school playing, both
softball and volleyball.
Julianna Scribner, a 2021

Julianna, the daughter of
Scottie and Kimberly Scrib-
ner, is preparing to become
a visual information opera-
tor/maintainer for the Army
Her grandfather and father
served in the Army, and her
19-year-old brother is in basic
training.
Julianna was a member of
National Honor Society, took
college and Advanced Place-
ment courses, was a member
of numerous clubs including
Lions and Spanish, and won
many art competitions.
