LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEETS

GENERAL MATHEMATICS
S.Y. 2021 – 2022 1st Semester
1st Quarter Week 7

Learning Competency:
M11GM-Ig-1. Graphs exponential functions
M11GM-Ig-2. Solves problems involving exponential functions, equations, and inequalities

Graphing Exponential Functions

Steps in graphing exponential functions.
1. Make a table of values using the exponential function by assigning values for x and then solving the
value of y or f(x).
2. Plot the points obtain in the table.
3. Sketch a curve line passing through this point considering the horizontal asymptote.

Example
Graph the exponential function 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥
Step 1
𝑥 = −2 𝑥 = −1 𝑥=0 𝑥=1 𝑥=2
𝑓(−2) = 2−2 𝑓(−1) = 2−1 𝑓(0) = 20 𝑓(1) = 21 𝑓(2) = 22
1 1 1 1 𝑓(0) = 1 𝑓(1) = 2 𝑓(2) = 4
𝑓(−2) = 2 = 𝑓(−1) = 1 =
2 4 2 2

𝑥 -2 -1 0 1 2
𝑓(𝑥) 1 1 1 2 4
4 2

Step 2 and 3

Note: Based on the previous lesson, we can deduce that the horizontal asymptote of 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 is 𝑦 = 0 or the
x-axis, so the graph approaches the x-axis, but they will never intersect.

The Doubling Time Growth Model

The doubling time growth model is defined as
𝑡
𝑃 (𝑡) = 𝑃0 2𝑑
where
𝑃(𝑡) is the population at time t
𝑃0 is the population at the beginning or at time 𝑡 = 0
𝑑 is the time will it take to be doubled (doubling time).

Example
The bacterium Escherichia coli (E. coli) is found naturally in the intestines of many mammals. In a particular
laboratory experiment, the doubling time for E. coli is found to be 30 minutes. If the experiment starts with a
population of 1,000 E. coli and there is no change in the doubling time, how many bacteria will be present in 15
minutes?
Given:
𝑃0 = 1000 𝑑 = 30 𝑡 = 15
Formula:
𝑡
𝑃 (𝑡) = 𝑃0 2𝑑
Solution (Substitution then simplify):
15
𝑃(15) = 1000 ∗ 230
𝑃(15) = 1414.23 𝑜𝑟 1414
Conclusion:
There will be 1414 E. coli bacteria after 15 minutes.

Note: The answer is rounded down because the number of bacteria should be a whole number.

The Half-life Decay Model

The half-life decay model is defined as
𝑡
1 ℎ
𝐴 ( 𝑡 ) = 𝐴0 ( )
2

where
𝐴(𝑡) is the amount at time t
𝐴0 is the amount at the beginning or at time 𝑡 = 0
ℎ is the time will it take to be half (half-life).

Example
Scientist discovered a new radioactive isotope. Its half-life is 1.23 years. If you start with a sample of 45 grams,
how much will be left in 10 months?
Note that the half-life and time do not have the same unit, so 1.23 years will be converted into 14.76 months.
Given:
𝐴0 = 45 ℎ = 14.76 𝑡 = 10
Formula:
𝑡
1 ℎ
𝐴 ( 𝑡 ) = 𝐴0 ( )
2
Solution (Substitution then simplify):
10
1 14.76
𝐴(10) = 45 ∗ ( )
2
𝐴(10) ≈ 28.14
Conclusion:
There will be approximately 28.14 grams of the new radioactive isotope left after 10 months.
