POINTS TO REMEMBER

Injuries are classified into two categories “Intentional and Unintentional Inju-
ries”. Intentional injuries are injuries that occur with purposeful intent and include
homicide, suicide, domestic violence, sexual assault and rape, bias related vio-
lence and firearms. Unintentional injuries are injuries that occur without purposeful
intent, and are a leading cause of death and disability.

For this lesson, you will analyze the reasons why abuse and violent acts are
committed. You will identify the protective factors that will help you avoid becoming
a victim of violent actions and behaviors leading to intentional injuries. Finally, you
should be able to put into practice what you have learned by demonstrating ways
on how to prevent and control intentional injuries.

Activity 1: The Cause of Violence


Copy the diagram provided. Choose one intentional injury from
your previous lesson. Indicate the risk factors or reasons for vio-
lent actions and behaviors (cause) that lead to intentional injuries
(effect). Answer the guide questions that follow.
