X. Self-Evaluation ( Synthesis of the module)

Answer the following question:

1. How did these invention and discoveries impact the society?

Paulo Campos constructed the first radionuclide, radioisotope laboratory in the Philippines. As a result,
it was made possible for the first time in the Philippines to conduct such procedures as the basal
metabolism test and radioactive iodine therapy. Then he conducted a research titled: The Genetic Factor
in Endemic Goite. His research on whether there was a genetic factor that contributed to endemic
goiter. He proposed that the iodine intake deficiency thought to be the main cause of goiter and was
just one of the triggering factors of the disease. His research helps us to understand better the illness
called goiter which we can prevent.

2. How were these inventions and discoveries support by the government?

With funding provided by the International Atomic Energy Authority and other Philippine institutions
Paulo Campos constructed the first radionuclide, radioisotope laboratory in the Philippines. And with
the funding’s from the IAEA and the World Health Organization, Paulo Campos conducted significant
research on goiter, a common medical problem in the Philippines. His team first suggested the injection
of iodized oil (see poppy seed oil) to goiter patients, a treatment later advocated by the WHO.

3. Did these inventions and discoveries serve the public good? Explain your answer

Paulo Campos first radionuclide, radioisotope laboratory in the Philippines, this invention serve the
public good which help the Philippine society to conduct procedures like the basal metabolism test and
radioactive iodine therapy. And with his research titled: The Genetic Factor in Endemic Goiter, this
research help us to understand better the common factor that effects, cause and treatment of goiter so
that we can lessen or prevent this illness to occur.
