1. What is globalization and when it starts?

According to Beverly Bird and Carol kopp, “ The Globalization is the spread of

products, technology, information, and jobs across national borders and cultures. In

economic terms, it describes an interdependence of nations around the globe fostered

through free trade ”. While Globalization 101 said “ Globalization is a process of

interaction and integration among the people, companies, and governments of different

nations, a process driven by international trade and investment and aided by information

technology. This process has effects on the environment, on culture, on political systems,

on economic development and prosperity, and on human physical well-being in societies

around the world ” and The Peterson Institution for international economics said “

Globalization is the word used to describe the growing interdependence of the world’s

economies, cultures, and populations, brought about by cross-border trade in goods and

services, technology, and flows of investment, people, and information”.

The statements above simply stated that the Globalization is interconnection of

one country to another. We can socially interact with the various population and have an

exchange of ideas, values, belief and cultures. Every country gives attention to the

intergovernmental organization like United Nations (UN) and the World Trade

Organization (WTO) and implemented the international law . Globalization is also an

exchange of good and services or trading with the other country.

The Grills and Thompson, globalization began since Homo sapiens began from

migrating from the African continent to populate the rest of the world. Frank and Grills

considered the Silk Road (Asia, Europe, Africa) the best example for archaic

globalization 5,000 years ago. Silk Road, also called Silk Route, ancient trade route,
linking China with the West, that carried goods and ideas between the two great

civilizations of Rome and China. Silk went westward, and wools, gold, and silver went

east. China also received Nestorian Christianity and Buddhism (from India) via the Silk

Road.

The Spaniards came to the Philippines, our ancestors were already trading with

China, Japan, Siam, India, Cambodia, Borneo and the Moluccas. The Spanish

government continued trade relations with these countries, and the Manila became the

center of commerce in the East. The Spaniards closed the ports of Manila to all countries

except Mexico. All the goods and spices that are exported and imported to other countries

will going through the mexico before it will be distributed to the other countries. In this

trade, The tobacco industry was placed under government control during the

administration of Governor General Basco. In 1781, a tobacco monopoly was

implemented in the Cagayan Valley, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Isabela, Abra,

Nueva Ecija, and Marinduque. Each of these provinces planted nothing but tobacco and

sold their harvest only to the government at a pre-designated price, leaving little for the

farmers. No other province was allowed to plant tobacco. The government exported the

tobacco to other countries and also part of it to the cigarette factories in Manila. The

farmers has no rights to complain because they know what will happened to them if they

go against the government. Even in the land of they are farming was collected by the

friars and would allow the Filipino in that land in one condition, They will give almost all

the money that they gain in what they harvested. The crops that our farmers harvested

was subjected to export because friars was after the money.

2. How is Globalization affected the Philippines? Cite example

The impact of globalization in our country that I currently experienced is the

improvement on the education. Last two years ago, Our Government implemented the K to 12

programs or Senior high school. K to 12 programs is based on the American education. I think

the Government came up with this program because the previous colleges doesn’t have any idea

on what courses they are taking so they often failed and having a hard time to understand the

topics that the professor teach them. This stage becomes the foundation or preparation for

college. The students can still think of their capability and interest, if this course is really for

them. I also heard that the other Overseas Filipino Worker when they got in Europe they still

need to study for two years to pursue the works align to the degree they finished in the

Philippines. Our country also benefit by giving a high quality education but at the lower cost.
Many foreigner went to our country just to study because the college school abroad is too

expensive.

Second, There are too many job that are available to every Filipino not just in local but

also in other country. Due to Globalization, there are foreigner who establish a business or

company and merge with Filipino investor. Establishing a business could help our economic

growth and also it decreases the number of Filipino who are unemployed. Business need an

employment to run their businesses. The other example of this are the OFW (Overseas Filipino

Worker) who truly raise the flag of the Filipino. We know that OFW are brave despite of the

loneliness they felt they still give their best on their work to provide the needs of their family

here in the Philippines.

Third example is the trade, We exported and imported goods, In the past years, We are

known as Number 1 exporter of rice but because of being number 1 the other country got

interested and really ask a helped to teach them how to plant a rice. As of September 2018, the

top goods that we export in all countries are the Bananas (Fresh)

Fourth impact of globalization is the advancement of technology, Due to advancement of

technology we can easily talk to our love ones that are far from us. It also helped us in our works

in school because we can search everything through Google. When I don’t understand some

theories and transaction on my accounting book I often watch videos on YouTube because there

are lot of people who are sharing their knowledge through videos most of them are professor

they are solving a problems and showing the solution while they are explaining the transactions.

the Canvas and student portal those are useful in our school not just to the student but also to the

registrar and professor.

For me as student, It makes my life easier because when we have activity in canvas I still

have time to think what I’m going to answer on the activity and I still have time to search to get

an idea on the what the question all about. Globalization has a lot of advantage but we must filter

the programs that we wanted to adopt from the other country.
