Antonio Pigafetta 1. It refers to the complete name of the chronicler of the document

entitled, "The Voyage around the World".

1. What is the primary reason of the author in writing the document? How How was it produced?

- Pigafetta tells how, being in Barcelona in 1519, he heard about Magellan's expedition, and being
wishful to learn about the world, he asked for and obtained the permission to join the voyage.
→Magellan wanted to prove that the world was round and through his exploration he DID PROVE that
the Earth is round

2. What is the main theme in the document? Explain briefly.

- The expedition's purpose was to find a western route to Asia through the Americas as an alternative to
the eastern route around Africa, which was under Portuguese authority due to the Treaty of Tordesillas.

3. What specific information of importance is provided in the text? Explain its important to the
understanding of Philippine history.

-He found the Strait of Magellan which is now known as the Magellan Strait. While shipping via the Strait
poses challenges it was far safer than circumnavigating Cape Horn at the time. They learned example
that scientists and sailors had been correct in their assessments of the Earth's shape. It also revealed
that the Earth was significantly larger than previously imagined. Mathematically, the Greeks were aware
of this.

4. What light does it shed on people, their politics and economy, religious and cultural practices?
Analyze the text.

-The catholic religion was spread by Magellan in the text.Religion has an impact on more than just one
person's habits. These ideas and practices can have a huge impact on a community, a country, or a
region. Religious practices both shape and are shaped by the culture in which they are practiced.

5. What is your personal evaluation on the impact of the document in the understanding of the 16th
century people and their culture in the islands?

-Pigafetta was one of the 18 men who returned to Spain in 1522, under the command of Juan Sebastián
Elcano, out of the approximately 240 who set out three years earlier. These men completed the first
circumnavigation of the worldDuring the expedition, he served as Magellan's assistant and kept an
accurate journal which later assisted him in translating the Cebuano language.
