Mid-term Exam for Electronics I, Nov 21, 2019

Name _________________ ID_________________________

There are four problems of 25% each. This is a closed book exam except each student is allowed
to bring one sheet of A4 paper with hand-written notes. No calculator or any electronic device
with stored materials related to the exam is allowed.

1. An npn transistor having Is = 10-15 A and β = 100 is connected as follows: The emitter is
grounded, the base is fed with a constant-current source supplying a dc current of 10 µA,
and the collector is connected to a 5-V dc supply via a resistance RC of 3 kΩ. Assuming
that the transistor is operating in the active mode, find VBE and VCE. Use these values to
verify active-mode operation. Replace the current source with a resistance connected
from the base to the 5-V dc supply. What resistance value is needed to result in the same
operating conditions? What is the maximum value of RC that will still result in active-
mode operation?
2. An npn transistor is connected through RC = 5 kΩ to a voltage source of 15 V and RE =
3kΩ to ground. A resistor of 100 kΩ is connected between the base and the 15 V voltage
source. Another resistor of 50 kΩ is connected between the base and the ground. Draw
the circuit and find the voltages at all nodes and the currents through all branches. (1)
Assume β = 100. (2) Assume β = 200.
3. For the circuit in problem 2, it is required to have VC = 10 V and VE = 4.3 V and IC = 1
mA. What should RC and RE be? Select two resistors for the base circuit to make the
circuit work as required.
4. An npn transistor is connected through RC to a voltage source of 1.5 V and RE to -1.5V.
The base is grounded. Draw the circuit. Design the circuit to establish IC = 0.2 mA and
VC = 0.6 V. The transistor exhibits VBE = 0.8 V at IC = 1 mA, and β = 100.
