meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, including figurative and connotative
meaning; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone.

Your job as the student: Define words related to the short story “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant

1. Define each of the words using an app on your phone, a computer, the story, or a dictionary. There
might be multiple meanings for some words, you need to analyze which meaning the author was using
to enhance the short story and use that definition.

2. Find at least two synonyms for each word using any of the resources listed above.

3. Write each word in a complete sentence using correct punctuation.

4. Identify the part of speech for each vocabulary word given in its form.

There are only ten words, each of these activities are worth one point for each word making this activity
worth 40 total points. You will complete the work on another sheet of paper, so please remember to
write your name and your teacher’s name on any additional paper you use, and please write in pen so
that it comes through more clearly on scans and uploads.
