1 The correct answer is B: In the notice, ‘one’ refers to ‘a picnic lunch’. Walkers can get
a picnic lunch from the café to take on the walk with them, but only if they order it ‘a day in
advance’. A is incorrect. The walkers are taking picnic lunches with them. C is incorrect.
The notice doesn’t say that walkers can’t use the café car park. It says that there aren’t many
spaces: ‘Café has limited parking’.

2 The correct answer is C: The label says ‘Think about the climate! Save energy and wash at
30oC’. A is incorrect. This isn’t a general instruction. It is only for this piece of clothing. B is
incorrect. The label doesn’t give any information about this. It says that this piece of clothing
should be washed with other clothes that are a similar colour.

3 The correct answer is B: Domenico asks ‘Can you get the tickets as soon as you get to
the cinema?’ Ana will probably arrive before Domenico because he explains ‘I’m going to be
delayed (late)’. A is incorrect. Domenico says that he is ‘going to be delayed (late)’. But he
doesn’t say that he will miss the start of the film. C is incorrect. Domenico wants to avoid being
in a queue. If Ana buys the tickets, they ‘won’t have to stand in a long queue’.

4 The correct answer is A: In the notice, ‘Failing to do this’ means not returning library books

doesn’t mention visiting other businesses. C is incorrect. Gina doesn’t take the photographs
herself in the photo sessions – she provides the flowers. D is incorrect. Gina says she has all
kinds of customers, but she doesn’t say that she prefers some customers to others.

12 The correct answer is D: In the second paragraph, Gina says ‘My day starts at 4 a.m. … but

number of different towns when Jenny was a child’ in the text before the gap. ‘However’ after
the gap shows that a different idea is coming. The text in the gap mentions a disadvantage, and
in the text after the gap, we are told that ‘there were some advantages’.

17 The correct answer is H: In the answer sentence, ‘each new floor’ is about the floors in the
‘new apartment blocks’ in the text before the gap. ‘this early experience’ in the text after the gap
refers to ‘watching as each new floor was added’ in the answer sentence.

rubbish that they don’t want any more. ‘take away’, ‘give away’ and ‘put away’ are all phrasal
verbs too, but they don’t make sense in this sentence.

22 The correct answer is B: The word needed here must mean how big or small an object is,
and the only word that means this is ‘size’. ‘the size of something’ means ‘the same size as
something’.

23 The correct answer is C: The phrasal verb ‘end up’ means where something is when it
stops moving, or finishes its journey. ‘keep up’, ‘grow up’ and ‘catch up’ are all phrasal verbs
too, but they don’t make sense in this sentence.

24 The correct answer is D: The verb here is in the passive form. The text says that sea
creatures collect the little pieces of plastic. ‘search’ and ‘look’ must be followed by ‘for’. And
‘hunt’ doesn’t make sense here in this sentence.

25 The correct answer is C: The word for a particular type of animal is ‘species’. The plural
form is the same as the singular noun. Other nouns don’t make sense in this sentence.

26 The correct answer is B: The verb here is in the passive form. ‘affect’ means ‘have an effect
on’. The problem has affected cod, penguins and dolphins. The other verbs don’t have this
meaning and don’t make sense here.

27 The correct answer is ‘used’: We use the verb ‘used to’ to talk about something that was
true in the past, but isn’t true now. The old cinema wasn’t very good. The new cinema is much
better.

28 The correct answer is ‘have’: ‘have’ is the auxiliary verb needed to form the Present Perfect
of the verb ‘take’.

29 The correct answer is ‘so’: ‘so’ + adjective + ‘that’ is being tested here.

30 The correct answer is ‘if’, ‘when’, ‘whenever’ or ‘provided’: This can either be a
conditional sentence (zero conditional) with ‘if’ or ‘provided’ (‘provided’ means if, and only if) or
a sentence with a time clause using ‘when’ or ‘whenever’ (‘whenever’ means every time).

31 The correct answer is ‘will’: The writer is predicting that something will be true in the future.

32 The correct answer is ‘your’: A possessive adjective must be used with the adjective ‘own’
(my own, your own, her own, etc.). Here, the subject is ‘you’ and the possessive adjective that
goes with ‘you’ is ‘your’.
