Comments on Sentiment and Motive Scores – NodeXL Graph
The following graph was obtained post analysis to understand the sentiments and motives of the
Twitter users.
The Positive sentiments are depicted by Green color, Negative by Red, and Neutral by Gray color
which depict the different sentiments of the users as per scores provided by LIWC.
The manifestation of the Achievement motive was also taken into account while creating this graph,
and as can be seen, thicker lines means higher achievement, and vice versa. Through this we are
showcasing achievement oriented sentiment in a tweet that conveys an emotion, whether positive,
negative, or neutral.

-From this, we can see that music is more of a positive topic than a negative one, with majority
sentiments being neutral. Also, the average scores for the top ten scorers in positive sentiment are
higher than the average negative sentiment score of the top ten scorers.
-This also shows that even when expressing non-neutral sentiments, users are more focussed on the
positive aspects of the topic or are showcasing positive emotions more than negative ones.
-We can also view the manifestation of the achievement motive in the edge width as depicted in the
graph, and we see that this motive captures expressions of a desire for challenge and
accomplishment, which is obvious as majority of these tweets are coming from budding musicians
and independent artists, as are the top 10 accounts topping the scores in this motive.
Dominant Motives for Each Twitter Account
Subgroup Analyses were performed to measure motive-based homophily, and the following graph
metrics were obtained for the Harel-Koren algorithm for partitioning.
-Based on the graphs obtained below, we can conclude that Ideological birds of a feather flock
together, as Twitter users having similar motives have been identified and were seen to be more
highly connected and have similar sentiments as well. For example, the users with strong power
motive had mostly neutral tones of sentiment, and those with affiliation, reward, and achievement
motive were all more positively inclined.

-Moreover, people displaying mixed motives can serve as ideological integrators.
-The most dominant pure motive is that of Power, which reflects people’s desire for attentiveness to
dominance, status, and position in social hierarchy
-The affiliation motive captures the extent to which people express a preference for social
relationship and a desire for acceptance, and this is the second most dominant pure motive in the
conversation of Twitter users.
-I have also calculated the distribution of positive, negative, and neutral sentiments across the
spectrum of motives for different users.
-Through this, we can see that In all motives except for risk, the positive sentiment dominates over
negative. This shows that people associate risk with negative emotions.
