UNDERSTANDING THE SELF

REFLECTVE JOURNAL FOR MODULE 1

Our module 1 topic was all about the construct of the self from various disciplinary perspectives:
philosophy, sociology, anthropology, and psychology. We were taught about the philosophical perspective,
sociological and anthropological, and psychological perspective of self. There were different philosophers
that had different perspectives of self that had helped me also to know myself more. It made me given time
to understand and evaluate myself and know what are my strengths and limitations, and what things am I
best at. I have learned to give myself some time to deal with up with some things that needed time. I also
learned about how the self could be influenced by many factors including your own experiences as time
goes by. Self could also be influenced by your own social life, and the culture you grew up with. My most
favorite part in this module is the psychological perspective, wherein I had fun learning and also was
amazed about the terminologies by different philosophers. I have learned that I have a conscious and an
unconscious mind, where it had been working in me for many years now. I also had a lot of fun learning
about Sigmund Freud’s stages of psychosexual development wherein our body go through different stages
and as time pass by, our perspectives and desires are different from before.

The things that I have done that has made me better at doing all aspects in life after learning is that
I had given myself much attention and rest for a while. I was really socially anxious from before, but
throughout this journey I had examined and assured myself that what’s important is that I am not doing
anything wrong to others and I am happy. It took me a while to realize that no matter how fast or sow you
go, what’s more important is what you have experienced and learned during that journey. I gave myself an
advice to take things seriously when needed, to be more aware of myself, to do things one at a time and to
finish my tasks on time.

I believe that everyone still has a room for improvement, and that we all shouldn’t be stagnant
because change is inevitable. I could still improve things that could help me be much equipped to do all the
aspects in life. I can still learn because I am still growing. I would take notes about things that are beneficial
and non-beneficial to me, in order for me to know what is good and bad for me. And to also be more aware
of myself and to explore more on where my strengths and capabilities are at its best.
