OGL 481 Pro-Seminar I:

PCA-Choosing an Organization Worksheet

Worksheet Objectives:
1. Identify an organization and situation you want to study over the remainder of the course.
2. Describe the organization and the situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Name and describe your organization.

The name of the organization is O&G Construction (cover name). This

organization has been in business for over 50 years, but only in the Northern states and

was only involved with union work. They opened a branch in the Gulf Coast as a non-

union branch and we worked in the Oil & Gas industry, doing mechanical work that

involved fabrication and installation of piping systems for the plants. The organization

appeared to be well structured and had many systems already in place.

2) Describe your role in the organization (it can be an internal or external role).

My role in the organization was that of an Assistant Project Manager / Quality

Inspector. I was attached to one project manager while on a project. I helped him to

coordinate subcontracts, order material, track the project and cost, along with client

interfacing. I was also responsible for checking the quality of the work being performed

and completing any necessary forms showing the acceptance of the work.

3) Describe the situation, including information you think the will help the reader
understand the most important elements of the situation. (This will require
selectivity: part of the art of case writing is separating the essential facts from the
mass of information that might be included).

I was still considered new at this company when I was first introduced to the

situation I am about to discuss. I was passed a project that I was told was given to another

PM, however, he moved away, and they needed someone to run the project. I started to

dive into the project specifics when I was told not to spend time looking at all the

numbers and detailed information but to make sure the project ran smoothly and on

budget. Throwing up red flags, I found out that the reason they did not want me to

investigate the project too deep was because the individual they had assigned to estimate

the project had little knowledge on the type of project and extremely under bid the

project. There was material missed for the project, equipment that was undersized for the

project, along with the size of the crew needed to complete the project was grossly

underestimated. The organization wanted us to figure out how to salvage the project but

not cost the company.
