Discuss The Difference Between Global Warming and Climate Change
Discuss The Difference Between Global Warming and Climate Change
“Global warming” refers to the rise in global temperatures due mainly to the increasing
concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. “Climate change” refers to the increasing
changes in the measures of climate over a long period of time – including precipitation,
temperature, and wind patterns.
2. Discuss what is the Greenhouse effect.
The greenhouse effect is a natural process that warms the Earth’s surface. When the
Sun’s energy reaches the Earth’s atmosphere, some of it is reflected back to space and the rest is
absorbed and re-radiated by greenhouse gases.
Greenhouse gases include water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone and some
artificial chemicals such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).
The absorbed energy warms the atmosphere and the surface of the Earth. This process maintains
the Earth’s temperature at around 33 degrees Celsius warmer than it would otherwise be,
allowing life on Earth to exist.
2. Discuss the effects of both Global Warming and mention some proofs that it is taking
place
The planet's average surface temperature has risen about 2.12 degrees Fahrenheit (1.18 degrees
Celsius) since the late 19th century, a change driven largely by increased carbon dioxide
emissions into the atmosphere and other human activities. 4 Most of the warming occurred in the
past 40 years, with the seven most recent years being the warmest. The years 2016 and 2020 are
tied for the warmest year on record. 5
Warming Ocean
The ocean has absorbed much of this increased heat, with the top 100 meters (about 328 feet) of
ocean showing warming of more than 0.6 degrees Fahrenheit (0.33 degrees Celsius) since
1969.6 Earth stores 90% of the extra energy in the ocean.
The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have decreased in mass. Data from NASA's Gravity
Recovery and Climate Experiment show Greenland lost an average of 279 billion tons of ice per
year between 1993 and 2019, while Antarctica lost about 148 billion tons of ice per year.7

Glacial Retreat
Glaciers are retreating almost everywhere around the world — including in the Alps, Himalayas,
Andes, Rockies, Alaska, and Africa.8

Global sea level rose about 8 inches (20 centimeters) in the last century. The rate in the last two
decades, however, is nearly double that of the last century and accelerating slightly every year.10

Both the extent and thickness of Arctic sea ice has declined rapidly over the last several
decades.11

Extreme Events
The number of record high temperature events in the United States has been increasing, while the
number of record low temperature events has been decreasing, since 1950. The U.S. has also
witnessed increa
5. Reflect, and answer the question What can you do to help solve the problem of global
warming and climate change?
- I do believe that global warming is an event in which no one can stop, however there
are still ways to lessen its effects. In our own simple ways such as being responsible within
ourselves, just like in times where in we would go camping or even go for a hike, we must not
throw away our trashes on the camping sites or on the streets but we must carry with us the
responsibility of doing such acts. We must be educated enough to know that one single plastic
bottle could be the cause of flash floods. We must always remember that the smallest things
makes the biggest effects.
