Fill in the blanks 1-mark questions


1. Name one object made from the wood?
Ans: Table

2. Name one shining object?


Ans: Glass bowl.

3. Name one item that floats on water?


Ans: Paper

4. Name one material that floats on oil?


Ans: Wood

5. Name one material that floats on kerosene?


Ans: Thin plastic sheet

Very short answer questions 2-mark questions


1. Define solid?
Ans: Solid is any material that has definite shape and definite volume. For example, stones,
wood etc.

2. What is liquid?
Ans: Liquid is any material that do not have definite shape but has definite volume. For
example, water, milk etc.

3. What is gas?
Ans: Gas is any material that neither has definite shape nor definite volume. For example,
oxygen, nitrogen etc.

4. Define the term soluble.

Ans: Anything that can be dissolved is known as soluble, such as sugar, salt etc.

5. Define the term insoluble.


Ans: Anything that does not dissolve is known as insoluble. For example, oil does not
dissolve in water.

6. Name two gases which is insoluble in water?


Ans: Hydrogen and nitrogen are the two gases insoluble in water.

7. Define the word transparent?


Ans: The material which can allow the light to pass through it are known as transparent
material.

8. Define the word translucent?


Ans: The material which allow only partial light to pass through it, it is known as translucent.

9. Define metals?
Ans: Metals are hard, lustrous and good conductors of electricity. For example, copper, gold
etc.

10. Define non-metals?


Ans: They are brittle and are not good conductor of electricity. They are not lustrous. For
example, coal, rubber.

Long Answer Questions 5-mark questions


1. Name three states of matter and their characteristic properties?
Ans: The three states of matter are solid, liquid and gas. Solid have definite shape as well as
definite volume. For example, wood etc. Liquid do not have definite shape but they have
definite volume, for example, milk etc. Gases neither have definite shape nor definite volume,
for example, oxygen etc.

2. Describe an experiment to show that palm is translucent?

Ans: Cover the glass of a torch with the help of your palm in the dark place. Then switch on
the torch and observe from the other side of the palm. You will see that some part of light
passes through the palm but not all passes through it. This shows that our palm is translucent.

3. Why the grouping of the objects is helpful?


Ans: Grouping objects is important to locate the objects easily and quickly. It also helps to
know whether the objects grouped are finished or not. This is very helpful especially for the
shopkeepers. He will be able to know whether his stock is finished or not.
