LESSON PLAN

! SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

LESSON ORGANISATION

Year Level: Year 1 Time: 8.30 Date: 12th March 20 Students’ Prior Knowledge:

Learning Area: Math - Ways in which objects move: push, pull, bounce,

Strand/Topic from the Australian Curriculum slide, fall, spin, float

Measurement and Geometry: - Describe position and movement

- Work independently, or with others when required, to create

and safely share sequenced steps for solutions (WATPPS10)

- Give and follow directions to familiar locations (ACMMG023)

- Measure and compare the lengths and capacities of pairs of

objects using uniform informal units (ACMMG019)

General Capabilities (that may potentially be covered in the lesson)

Literacy Numeracy ICT Critical and Ethical Personal and Intercultural
competence creative thinking behaviour Social competence understanding

Cross-curriculum priorities (may be addressed in the lesson)

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia Sustainability
histories and cultures

Proficiencies:(Mathematics only) Understanding, Problem Solving

Lesson Objectives (i.e. anticipated outcomes of this lesson, in point form beginning with an action verb)

As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:

• Measure the distance between two points accurately

• Program WEDO frog to move to a designated destination

Teacher’s Prior Preparation/Organisation: Provision for students at educational risk:

• Box with a road map • Enabling: mark the masking tape as well so they

• Lego Wedo frog can visually see how many block they need to

• Tablets make the WEDO move

• Images • Extending: use a tape measure rather than the

• Book “Oi Frog” already measured blocks so they have to decide

• Paper how many spaces to move the WEDO

• Pencils

• Blocks (16cm long)

LESSON DELIVERY (attach worksheets, examples, marking key, etc, as relevant)
Time Motivation and Introduction: Resources/References
Align these with the
8.30 am Read “Oi Frog" segment where they will
be introduced.
• Good morning year ones, today we are going to be using little
WEDO robots and some programming tools to make them move.
First we are going to read this book “Oi Frog” to see where we are
going to make the robot move to. Listen to everywhere the frog
wants to sit and enjoy the story
Lesson Steps:
Introduce ICT tool being explored
• Today we’re going to be exploring how to use and program the WEDO.

• The WEDO is a programmable tool that is built with lego.

• Before we came today we built this frog, just like the frog from the story.
blocks
Demonstrate how WEDO frog can be programmed and how it moves.
Give each student opportunity to take a turn using it.
Get out road map and put the first step onto it and place the frog on that.
• Road map is masking tape on cardboard, each road measured as a multiple

of 16cm (because one “jump” of the WEDO frog is 16cm).

• Multiples of 16cm are marked by crossroads, which are locations where the
cardboard roadmap
students may place locations.

Explain to the students that we’e going to recreate frog’s adventure in the
story using the WEDO.
• Here we have this road map, which we’re going to use to build a path for

our frog to go on.

• So when we get to a new location in the book, one of you will have to find

the object out of these ones below and put them on the map.

Re-read through the book one page at a time whilst the other helps the
students.
• Next the froggy goes to sit on the ___, find the ___

• Place that on the road map

• Now we’e going to get the frog to go from the log to the ___.

Program the frog to do that as an example

‣ to know how far to program the frog to go, use the blocks (blocks are coloured

cardboard measured to 16cm’s long).

‣ If the line is 28cm long, program 2 into the frog.

‣ Use the blocks in the example demonstration to model how to use them to the

students
Time Resources/References
Now the students will find subsequent locations whilst going through the Align these with the
8.30 am book, placing them onto the map. segment where they will
be introduced.
• Now the froggy is sitting on the ___, can you find the ___?

• Good, now place ___ on the map

• Student decides where to place it (on a crossroads as they will mark

a multiple of 16cm)

Each time they do this they must program the frog to go to the next location
(using the blocks).

Halfway through the story, teacher can say that instead of choosing a
location (at a crossroads) then measuring it out, they can instead measure out
a distance along the road using the blocks, then place it there. (then they’l
know that it’s, for example, 3 blocks along and program 3 into the tablet).

• Can also add in corners, where they will program the WEDO to go
to the end of the road, then turn it manually before putting in
another number).

Go through the story and do all locations, until roadmap is complete.

Lesson Closure:

Students can then take turns using the WEDO to explore the roadmap they
have created using the frog.

Then they shall pack up the WEDO and pack away the tablets

Students will then have a discussion in partners about what they learnt and
what they enjoyed about the lesson.

Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)

Tablets packed away

Roadmap moved out of the way and WEDO packed safely back into its box.

Assessment:

Observational data

• Objective One: Children have used the blocks to correctly measure

distance the WEDO needs to move.

• Objective Two: Children have entered in the correct number to get

the WEDO to its destination.
LESSON EVALUATION (to be completed AFTER the lesson)

Assessment of Lesson Objective and Suggestions for Improvement:

Teacher self-reflection and self-evaluation:
