Windows and User Interface

Desktop
A desktop is a computer display area that represents the kinds of objects one might find on top of
a physical desk, including documents, phone book etc. A desktop can be contained in a window
that is part of the total display area or can be full screen, taking up the total display area.

Icon
Icon is a small graphical representation of a program or file. When we double click on icon, the
associated file or program will be opened.

Window
A window is an area on the screen that displays information for a specific program. Windows are

used by most applications as well as the operating system itself.

Dialog Box
Dialog box is a common type of window in the GUI of an operating system. It displays
information, and asks a user for input.

Task bar
A task bar is an element of a graphical user interface which has various purposes. It typically
shows which programs are currently running. Task bar generally, is the form of strip located
along one edge of the screen.

Start button
Start allows you to access your computer programs and configure Microsoft windows easily by
accessing the start menu.

Start menu
The Microsoft windows start menu is the primary location in windows to locate your installed
programs and find any files or folders. By default, the start menu is accessed by clicking start in
the bottom left corner of the windows desktop screen.

Cortana
Cortana is a Microsoft’s personal productivity assistant that helps you save time and focus
attention on what matters the most.
Task view
Task view allows a user to quickly locate an open window, quickly hide all windows and show
the desktop, and to manage windows across multiple monitors or virtual desktops.

Date & Time


In date & time, you can choose to let windows 10 set your time and time zone automatically, or
you can set them manually.

To set your time and time zone in Windows 10, go to Start  Settings  Time & language 
Date & Time.

Show desktop
Show Desktop button is actually a tiny slice of taskbar. Once you click it, your application
windows will temporarily disappear, and you will see the desktop.

Power Button
Click on power button action drop down list and select the action you want to set as default.
Click on the OK button and the change is now applied.

Shut Down
Shut down is a term used to describe closing all software programs in preparation to turn off a
computers power.

Restart
Restart does shut down all of the computers processes, including the kernel. Restart should be
used when installing updates/software and to resolve any errors.
Experiment – 1

Objective -- Applying basic operations on a folder in windows.

1. Creating a folder
 Bring the mouse pointer to the blank area of the desktop and right
click on it.
 A context menu will appear on the screen. Click on New option and
further from the sub –context menu select Folder.
 A New folder will appear on the desktop. We will name it as My
Folder.

OR

 Press Ctrl+ Shift + N key combination to create New Folder at any


location on windows.

2. Creating a text file in the folder


 Double click on My Folder to open it.
 Right click on the blank area of the folder and from the context menu
click on New option.
 Further, click on Text Document option and New Text Document will
be created. We will name this Text Document as My File.
 Double click on My File to open it and now we can type our text and
save it by pressing Ctrl+ S key combination.
 Click on Close button once we are done working on the Text
Document.

3. Copying/Moving the Folder from desktop to C:Drive


Copying a folder means creating a duplicate copy of a Folder on a new
location. Whereas, moving a folder means removing the folder from the
previous location and pasting it to a new location.
 Right click on My folder and click on Copy/Cut option.
 Double click on This PC icon and further, double click on C: Drive
to open it folder.
 Right click on the blank area and select Paste option from the context
menu.

OR

 Press Ctrl+ V key combination to paste the folder.

OR

 From the Home Tab click on Paste option.

preparing for bank exams and my examination is to be held on January 12, 2021. I have to
