GLOBAL STAGE – At-a-Glance Segment: Primary English Type: International English Publishing Year: 2019

What is Global Stage?

Global Stage is a high-level Language and Literacy primary course for private schools that need to teach beyond the test and meet parents’ expectations that
their children will become competent speakers and writers of English. Global Stage brings together a rigorously benchmarked language program with a diverse
and engaging literacy program which will support teachers and learners in developing skills in English as well as a love of reading.

The course encourages self-direction and gives students structured opportunities to develop their thinking skills to build on their understanding of the world.
Children are supported in becoming caring, responsible citizens and are empowered to succeed on the global stage.

The Language Book contains the building blocks of language skills and systems. Students will focus on learning the language and how it works. Beautiful picture
dictionary scenes, lively songs, and contextualized grammar sections support them in working out and learning new language. Photos and texts about children
around the world will inspire them to explore thought-provoking questions about what it means to be a Global Citizen.

Global Stage has a communicative ESL approach incorporating tried and tested methodologies for language learners over the age of 6 who are not
exposed to English at home. The goal is for students to reach a high level of fluency in a bilingual environment.

Target Customer Profile:

Teacher: Experienced teachers with a B1 – B2 level of English. Many have some certification or degree in teaching. Digital
is important to these schools although not all teachers are comfortable with using it in class.

Learner: Children whose parents have high expectations and want them to be exposed to English at an early age and with
the aim of reaching a high level of fluency by the end of Primary. They may also be studying a subject area taught in
English. These students have access to technology and digital content at home. They have some exposure to English in
their lives, but English learning takes place at school.

Product Story

The high level segment in Primary is made up of students

from the higher socioeconomic tiers in their county. Before
creating this course, the publishing team visited these
kinds of schools across several markets and noticed that in
the reception areas they had posted on the wall their
vision and mission statements which spoke of educating
children to be leaders and preparing them to compete in
the future at a global level.

This word cloud was created by pulling out word and

phrases from these vision and mission statements.

Students in these schools tend to have more access to technology, more international awareness and they spend more time
on English in the classroom than the majority of other Primary students in their country. Parents pay high tuition, have very
high expectations of their children, and are often very demanding of the school. Their expectations include their child
getting an education that will prepare him/her with the skills needed to succeed in today’s world and in the future, first by
getting into top secondary schools and universities and later, in the workforce.

st
The phrase “Global Stage” is often used as a synonym for the world, specifically a 21 century world where people compete
for the best jobs and also where people collaborate, support each other and solve problems together. To be on the global
stage is to interact successfully with people beyond your community.

This course supports teachers as they prepare children with the skills they need to be successful in today’s world.

The Language Book contains the building blocks of language skills and systems. Students will focus on learning the language
and how it works. Beautiful picture dictionary scenes, lively songs, and contextualized grammar sections support them in
working out and learning new language. Photos and texts about children around the world will inspire them to explore
thought-provoking questions about what it means to be a Global Citizen.

The Language Book contains seven lessons per unit:

• Two vocabulary lessons. One includes a song and the other is linked to Global Citizenship themes and includes
listening activities.
• Two Explore Language lessons with grammar presentation and practice.
• A speaking lesson (Take the Stage / Talk About It) that presents either a presentation or conversational skill and
includes pronunciation practice.
• A writing lesson (Write About It) that explores writing mechanisms such as spelling and punctuation.
• A Think It Over lesson that focuses on self-reflection. This Assessment for Learning approach gets students involved in
their learning and helps the teacher tailor future lessons to the needs of the students.

The Literacy Book contains a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts, as well as activities for learners to explore literacy
concepts, develop reading skills, and respond to the texts they have read. As they work through the course, students will
further develop their thinking skills, and they will build self-reflection skills, which will allow them to become increasingly
more effective and independent learners.

There are two readings in each unit of the Literacy Book, which are fully explored in a series of lessons.

• A Get Ready to Read lesson introduces the unit topic and creates interest. It also includes a pre-reading exercise and
the reading skill focus.
• A Reading lesson presents a fiction or nonfiction text.
• An Explore the Reading lesson includes post-reading comprehension and analysis activities, and one of the texts is the
vehicle for the phonics activity.
• Each unit ends with a Think Together lesson that draws the two readings together and explores the Key Concept for
each unit.
Together, the Language and Literacy Books explore topics across the curriculum. Together the two books provide a
complete English language learning experience, covering the four skills, providing a solid foundation in vocabulary and
grammar, and helping train learners to become competent users of English and independent thinkers.

Additional practice for both the Language Book and the Literacy Book are found on Navio.

Sales Pitch

1. I want to hear more about Reading and Literacy.

The Language Book and the Literacy Book units are designed to provide a complete English language learning
experience. Used together all four skills are covered thoroughly and develop a solid foundation in vocabulary
and grammar.

Each unit of the Literacy Book contains two readings – one fiction and one non-fiction. Students also practice
specific reading skills and learning these skills helps them read more effectively giving them greater confidence
which will lead them to experience more pleasure from reading. The goal is to get student to read for pleasure
and to absorb information rather than focusing on the mechanics of language in the text. The phonics lessons
provide additional support for young readers.

2. I want to hear more about Global Citizenship and Social Emotional Learning.

Every learner comes to school with a wealth of knowledge, thoughts and opinions about the world and this is the
starting point for their continued learning. Every unit include moments for students to consider and share their
experiences as well as consider other points of view. This is the basis for empathy which is a fundamental goal of
the Global Citizenship lessons.

Global Stage aims to raise young learners’ awareness and respect for each other and the world around them.
There are two pages in every unit of the Language Book dedicated to Global Citizenship, though the theme of
global awareness is interwoven throughout the whole course.

The GCE lesson also includes listenings where students learn about different aspects of the lives of children
around the world.

The GCE lessons are also mapped to the UNESCO GCED Guidance.

3. I want to hear more about getting students to reach a high level of fluency.

Global Stage has a communicative, four skill ESL/ELT approach incorporating tried and tested methodologies for
language learners over the age of 6. Global Stage has two parallel Student Books, which means that it offers a
richer range of reading material and more opportunities to present, practice and monitor language progress with
visually appealing artwork and interesting themes and a step-by-step approach on the Student Book page. The
course takes students to a B1+ level.
