GEC 18- Ethics

1. Identify at least 3 human acts that have moral significance in preventing the spread of
Covid-19 and under what main sources of moral values do they fall?
 Wearing protective face mask and face shield, staying at home and practicing social
distancing. These human acts are under the moral values of Laws & Science. It is under
Laws because it was mandated by the authorities and a penalty was waiting if not
followed, and under moral values of Science because doctors and scientist have proven
that wearing protective face mask and face shield, staying at home and practicing social
distancing can help prevent opportunities to come in contact with contaminated surfaces
and infected people inside and outside the home.

2. In relation to no.1 above, do you think the Covid-19 related standards curtails your
freedom, hence, inhuman? Explain.
 Yes, it curtails my freedom. The virus itself is a threat to my life and health. The social
distancing and stay at home ordinance limits me to interact and socialize with people
hence Covid-19 is not just a health crisis but also a factor to my social development.
However, Covid-19 health standards can’t be considered inhuman, as this protocols are
meant only for everyone’s health safety. Instead of taking only our personal benefit. I
think we should recognize moral awareness and put more considerations to the well-
being of people around us and the society we’re living with.

3. Ms. Cotriona, a Filipina native and single mother had a fever and a dry cough. She went
to a hospital for a checkup. When asked by a doctor if she had a travel history, she
answered no because she thinks that she could be quarantined for 14 days and will not be
able to take care of her lovely twins - Bruhanica and Vampirina, when in truth and in fact
she had been to ltaly to meet her Knight in a shining armour - Doterticheli, her Italian
boyfriend. A week after, the doctor get sick of Covid-19 and died. Evaluate.

 What Ms. Catriona did was an immoral act. Her situation doesn’t exclude her for not
following health protocols. She’s a mother of two she’s a woman who has a capability to
know what is right or wrong, but clearly she lack moral decision making and moral
awareness. First evidence, was her abiding the law and not following the protocol of
quarantining for 14 even though she has a travel history. Second evidence was, refusing to
provide truthful information on their condition to health authorities. Quarantining for 14 days
and telling the truth about her conditions to the doctor is the right thing to do in that
setting, but her dishonesty and arrogance cost someone else lives, and in that case it is
clear that she should be compensated and be accountable for this.
