The Half of It: A Movie

Review
"It is said that
when one half
finds its other,
there's an
unspoken
understanding,
a unity, and
each would
know no greater
joy than this"

For a romantic comedy, coming-of-age film, The Half of It is remotely enjoyable. It's
not a stunning film or a film that pushes new bounds, but it does accomplish in being a
decent light-hearted romantic comedy. Directed by Alice Wu, starring Leah Lewis,
Alexxis Lemire and Daniel Diemer, three high schoolers learning what love is and how
to come with it.

“Hell is other In this 21st Century update though, The Half of It absolutely crushes "what it's like to
people.” be a teen" vibe that many movies failed to do. With some very clever scenes of texting,
dangerous, as some films can be ruined with too many of these, all those awkward
moments of love and acceptance are woven into a sneakily mature message about one's
real voice. When the picture shifts little to far into the cliques of school and some
unrealistic scenes of bullying, it falters a bit, but those are uncommon.

The film also tackled the typical life and struggles of Asians, or any other minority, in a
white populated country. There is always this wall that you can never cross because of
the race or ethnicity, no matter how good you are. It also explored with religion and
conflicts it bring to people in love, which is very ironic, considering that these so called
God will love us no matter what, yet have these restrictions that will instantly send you
to hell when you commit said sins. Through beliefs beneath the film talking about God
and his love, this film remains brave in spitting its real concept yet quite struggling.

What really makes The Half of It rise is its portrait of honest and selfless friendship. It
may follow familiar and even predictable beats but its central realationship outspaces
any genre trappings it stumbles into. It will undoubtely be praised for its nuanced
exploration of flourishing identity and all of the doubt and confusion that must be
navigated during such discovery. A rare teen-friendly dramedy in which romance takes
a backseat to acknowledging the fleeting that affectionately send you into adulthood.

The Half of It is the rare experience where one can feel the passion and consiousness in
each beat. Light-hearted, compassionate and just a shy of achieving its desired
greatness. The structural sequence was nice and easy, a tender and sweet movie, even
with its problem it's still enjoyable.
