BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Communication is characterized as a two-way process of transmitting information.

These communication models explain how communication happens.

1. Shannon-Weaver communication model (1949) or Linear communication model is a one-way

activity in which information flows from the sender to the receiver.
2. Interactive communication model shows a two-way activity.
3. Osgood and Schramm circular model presents communication as an endless "circular" flow of
conversations.
4. Transactional model presents communication not only as a two-way process but also a simultaneous
activity.
5. Helical model proposes that communication starts at birth and evolves as one grows up, and that one's
responses depend on past experiences.
In this module, you will learn further as you move on to every activity you will find here.

Activity 1.1. Let’s Build!

Direction: Make a diagram. Use the shapes given. Arrange them according to your chosen model and

communication model . This model is a one-way activity in which information flows

from the sender to the receiver. The receiver doesn’t need to give feedback. The
examples for this kind of communication model are listening to a radio, watching TV,
sh

listening to a music and fax message.

Activity 1.2. Spot the Difference

Directions: Get a partner and compare and contrast the models of communication by discussing with
him/her the diagrams. Write your answer on a sheet of paper.

REMEMBER

Communication is characterized as a two-way process of transmitting information. This involves

the sender, the message, the receiver, the channel, the feedback, and the noise.

m
er as
Here are the five Models of Communication

1. Shannon-Weaver communication model (1949) or Linear communication model is a one-

way activity in which information flows from the sender to the receiver. Feedback is not a necessary. The

receiver only accepts the information. The examples are watching TV, listening to the radio, among

others.

2. Interactive communication model shows a two-way activity. The sender and the receiver
is

have the same role in the conversation. The receiver gives feedback. The examples are a call center agent
talking to a caller, a job interview, and a patient and a doctor in the hospital.

3. Osgood and Schramm circular model presents communication as an endless "circular" flow
of conversations. It shows the same elements as the interactive communication model, The model
emphasizes the functions of the speaker in encoding, decoding, and interpreting. The listener has the same

function as the speaker. When the listener gives feedback, the speaker will do the same and the
conversation will go on and on. The examples are a class recitation and a group discussion.

4. Transactional model presents communication not only as a two-way process but also a
simultaneous activity. Senders and receivers are called participants since they are both capable of
sending or receiving messages anytime or at the same time.

The noise and the environment are the other elements that affect the process. The noise is any
distraction that affects the interpretation of the message. The examples are watching a school program and

m
attending a seminar.

5. Helical model proposes that communication starts at birth and evolves as one grows up, and
that one's responses depend on past experiences. It promotes an upward and forward movement. It shows
y

that knowledge increases as the interaction goes on. The example for this is the stages of man. When a
ed d

child learns a new word, he or she learns how to pronounce it and what it means. Later on, he or she may
ar stu

use it in conversations. As he or she grows up, he or she learns that the word has several meanings and
that it can be used in different contexts. His or her experience shows that communication not only evolves
but also is dependent on the past.
