LAB 0 (Zero)
Task - 1

An oscilloscope is connected to a battery of unknown voltage. The result is a straight line on

the display:

Assuming the oscilloscope display has been properly “zeroed” and the vertical sensitivity is
set to 5 volts per division, determine the voltage of the battery.

Answer

The voltage is slightly greater than 6.5 volt.

Task - 2

A technician prepares to use an oscilloscope to display an AC voltage signal. After turning the
oscilloscope on and connecting the Y input probe to the signal source test points, this display
appears:

What display control(s) need to be adjusted on the oscilloscope in order to show fewer cycles
of this signal on the screen, with a greater height (amplitude)?

ANSWER:

In order to get fewer cycles the timebase scale I.e the x-axis division should be adjusted
and in order to get the high amplitude the scale of y-axis I.e the voltage per division
should be adjusted .

Task 3

A technician prepares to use an oscilloscope to display an AC voltage signal. After turning the
oscilloscope on and connecting the Y input probe to the signal source test points, this display
appears:

What display control(s) need to be adjusted on

the oscilloscope in order to show a normal-
looking wave on the screen?
ANS:

To have a normal looking wave on the screen the amplitude should be adjusted , I.e is the
y-axis division which is basically the division of volt per second .

Task 4:

Connect this configuration in Multisim and measure the equivalent resistance. The reading
should be displayed in the multimeter.

Steps:-

1. Select the items shown in figure above.

2. Then power on the device.

3. Select the appropriate function.

Answer

Taks 5: Apply 10 V P-P sine wave, 1 KHz frequency using function generator and observe on
CRO, calculate Peak to Peak voltage and time to complete a cycle ( calibrate time and voltage
low). ANSWER:

The time per cycle is 500us .and volatge is 10 voltage.

Answer
Task 6: Apply 50mV maximum/peak triangular wave, 100 Hz frequency using function
generator and observe on CRO, calculate Peak to Peak voltage and time to complete a cycle
( calibrate time and voltage low).
ANSWER:

Peak to Peak value is 100mV and time to complete the cycle is 10ms .

Task 7: Apply 14 V P-P square wave, 10KHz frequency using function generator and observe
on CRO, calculate Peak to Peak voltage and time to complete a cycle ( calibrate time and
voltage low).

Peak to peak voltage is 14 v and time per cycle would be 10ms.

Task 8: Justify the following statements: (4 marks)
1. Composite signal is a combination of simple sine waves with different
frequencies,amplitudes and phases.
2. Channel bandwidth should always be more than signal bandwidth.
3. Distortion is internal phenomena while noise is external phenomena with signal.
4. Propagation speed of EM signal is medium dependent property.

1.ANSWER: Composite signal simply is a mixed signal with collection of different

components like frequencies, amplitude and phases. for example:a wave with attenuation
, distortion and noise signal , so that would be a proper composite signal.

2.ANSWER: Yes because if the channel bandwidth is less than signal bandwidth then the
signal will not pass from that channel .

3.ANSWER: Distortion is change of phase of the signal wave , while noise occurs only when
some additional wave is added to the signal wave causing the change in the signal itself ,
while their would be no change in the signal of the wave with distortion.

4.ANSWER: The EM signal waves do depend on the medium it is travelling i.e if it is travelling
from the fibre cable the propagation speed would be different while , propagation would
be totally different in the copper cable medium .

Task 9: From the given file find the following values

a) DC offset

b) Frequency

c) Amplitude (peak to peak)

Task 10: Find the audible range of frequency.

The audible range of frequency would be 20Hz to 20000Hz .

Which we can calculate with the help of the audible wavelength which is
0.0017m to 17 m ,
Now We know.

Velocity of sound = 340m/s.

Now we know , v=f*lamda

340 = f * 0.0017
F = 340/0.0017
F = 20000 Hz .

Similarly, F = 340/17 = 20Hz .
