04 Symbols of Kings: Establishing Context

1. What does the lion represent? Why would the rulers of England include so many of them
on the Coat of Arms? The lion represents bravery, courage, strength, ferocity. The lions(4)
on the Coat of Arms are Scottish lion rampant, Red lion of Scotland, (2) crowned English
lions. They represent all the ties James the 1 had.
2. What does the fleur-de-lis represent? Why is it featured on the Coat of Arms of British
rulers? The fleur-de-lis roughly translated means flower of the lily. It represents purity, and
light. It is also the badge of France. It is on the England coat of arms to represent the ties
between England and France.
3. What does the unicorn represent? Why would the rulers of England choose a unicorn to
support their shield? The unicorn is a Scottish symbol that represents courage, virtue, and
strength. It was used the show that England conquered Scotland.
4. The Coat of Arms includes two phrases, "Blessed are the peacemakers" and "Shame to
him who evil thinks." Choose one of these phrases and explain why a ruler might want it
included in a coat of arms. “Blessed are the peacemakers” I think that this means that those
who try to keep the peace are blessed and live a happy prosperous life. I think that a ruler
might have this on there shield/coat of arms because they are trying to say that they want
peace and not to go to war with others so praise them and you will be blessed.
5. Research one of the colors featured in the Coat of Arms. Based on what the color
represents, explain why it would be used in a royal coat of arms. The color Blue/Azure
represents loyalty, truth and strength, and I think the English monarchy wanted to let people
know not only are they loyal but strong too.
6. Write a paragraph of at least five sentences (75-100 words) explaining how all of the
elements included (shape, color, and symbols) are representative of your life and your values.
I used the colors Argent, Azure, Gules, and Or. These colors mean (Argent-truth, sincerity,
and peace), (Azure- loyalty, truth, strength, and faith), (Gules- warrior, strength, and
military), (Or- wisdom, generosity, glory, and faith). Argent(Silver/white), Azure(Blue),
Gules(Red), and Or(Gold). These colors represent a part of me as a person but, also my
family as a whole, I may not be the strength/military part of my family, but I sure do have
some strength in my (I don’t mean muscle). The symbols that I used were a Rustre (Lozenge
Round-Pierced) as my main symbol on the color Azure, lions as my support, a knights
helmet as my helmet, a fancy feather thing as my crest. I chose these things because they all
represent something about my family knights helmet as my ancestors and my brother in the
military(strength), the lions as my support, and courage. The Rustre (Lozenge Round-
Pierced) represents (Virtue, Loyalty, Intelligence).
