Market insights
In Poland and Russia, previous Austrade missions have identified significant opportunities in the fields of mining
safety, mine planning, project management, coal-bed methane drilling and extraction services, and the acquisition of
specialised equipment used in both underground and open-cut hard coal and lignite mine operations.
Turkey is similarly highly prospective in the same areas. Opportunities have also been identified in the exploration
sector, as well as the provision of equipment and services, particularly environmental engineering and consulting.
The Turkish Government has made the development of the coal sector a key priority. With the addition of new power
plants, Turkey is expected to become Europe’s third largest lignite producer by 2020.
Interest is growing in Australia as a reliable provider of quality technologies and services to Europe's major coal
producers. Austrade has identified the specific interests of major mining groups in each country:
 There is a sound appreciation of Australia’s world-class technology and skills - and a readiness to learn from
Australian experience.
 There is recognition that to compete internationally the Polish, Russian and Turkish coal industries need to invest
in new technology to lift productivity as cost pressures intensify. There is a heightened emphasis on sustainability
in work practices, safety and the environment.
 There are more than 20 coal basins in Russia, with most coal coming from seven of these: three in Western
Russia and four East of the Urals (particularly the Kuzbass region in Siberia). The Russian coal mining industry
has a strong commitment to export. Almost 20% of coal mined is exported, principally to the EU and China.
 Poland is Europe’s largest coal producer and is heavily dependent on this resource as it generates around 90% of
the country’s power needs. Poland accounts for about 3% of the worldwide output of bituminous coal. The Upper
Silesian, Lower Silesian and Lublin basins have existing resources that add up to 44.1bn tonnes of coal spread
across 128 deposits. The Upper Silesian Basin represents the major portion of the Polish reserves, with about
79% of the total in 110 deposits. The four main Polish coal companies have earmarked over US$5.5bn for
investments to be utilised between 2011-2015.
 Turkey has approximately 11.6 billion tonnes lignite in 33 lignite coal basins and 1.3 billion tonnes of hard coal
reserves in three major hard coal basins. With limited energy resources, Turkey’s rapid industrial development
continues to drive energy demand and increase its overall energy deficit. These are the major drivers for
significant investments by the Turkish Government in these coal basins, albeit in the context of more stringent
environmental conditions.
 Substantial restructuring of coal mining is being undertaken in the three countries. The mission is targeted to
capitalise on specific opportunities – and assist mission members achieve commercial outcomes.
