40.6.3.4 Virtual circuit services

A virtual circuit service (connection oriented) is considered superior to a connec-
tion-less service for handling long messages. Virtual circuits are analogous to the
telephone service in that messages are delivered in the order in which they are
sent. The full destination and source network addresses as well as the information
required in order to deliver a packet, are only required to establish a circuit.

Once a virtual circuit has been established the logical channel numbers allow either
of the DTEs on the virtual circuit to send data to the other. Network congestion is
controlled by limiting the inputs to a virtual circuit (or controlling the flow of data)
rather than by discarding packets.

Individual packets on a virtual circuit are rarely autonomous, generally they are only
part of a message.

Testing of electrical drive systems

Anthony J. Martyr, David R. Rogers, in Engine Testing (Fifth Edition), 2021

Palletization of the unit under test

Due to the lower number of service connections and their simpler format the time
taken to rig and derig an electric motor unit can be much shorter than its ICE equiv-
alent so the advantages of using palletization may be considered as less. However,
prerigging of a complex electric axle drive unit, which may require connection to
up to three dynamometer shafts, is clearly a good policy. To accommodate a pallet
mounting system that will have to deal with units of various dimensions and layouts
requires a highly adaptable test cell “island” and dynamometer mountings that allow
the machines to be easily moved to match the coupling face dimensions of the UUT.
Due to the high rigidity and critical shaft alignment with which propulsion motors
have to be mounted, it is preferable to make the pallet and prime dynamometer the
fixed node of the test configuration and move other dynamometers/driven units on
the common air-sprung, tee-slotted bedplate. The ZF system shown in Fig. 12.1 is
in a 3E configuration and the two-wheel simulating dynamometers are mounted on
height-adjustable frames to enable rapid and accurate shaft alignment. The same
pallet system used in a single motor shaft configuration may be seen in Fig. 9.14.

Service Connections
Planning the design, construction, and timing of installation of electric service
to a construction project should be contemplated from the very early stages. The
service connection equipment basically provides a connection between the power
company service and the facility and also measures the amount of electricity a facility
uses. From here a meter either feeds a disconnect switch or a main breaker or
fuse panel. The connection can be located either overhead or underground. The
service connection should be checked for type (i.e., voltage, amperage), and general
condition and whether the total power adequately serves the facility’s requirements.
The equipment should be clean and free from overgrown planting and debris. A
detailed discussion of installation requirements of electric service connections is
outside our scope.

Multicasting: Issues and Networking

16.4.1.1 Multicast Address Resolution Server (MARS)

ATM-based IP hosts and routers can use a Multicast Address Resolution Server
(MARS) [Talpade and Ammar, 1997] to support IP multicast over ATM point-to-mul-
tipoint connection service. The MARS maps the layer 3 multicast addresses into
the ATM addresses of the group members. The endpoints establish and manage
point-to-multipoint VCs to the group, as shown in Figure 16.5. They also establish
a point-to-point bidirectional VC to the MARS for control traffic that includes IGMP
join/leave and address resolution requests. The MARS asynchronously notifies hosts
of group membership changes using a point-to-multipoint VC. A multicast server
can receive data from senders and multicast it to the receivers on a point-to-multi-
point VC.
