FLANGED DUCTILE IRON GATE
VALVES Page 3 of 6
SCOPE
R3 1.1 This specification covers additional requirements for the design, inspection and testing of flanged
ductile iron gate valves sizes NPS 2 through 24, for pressure ratings as specified in ASME B16.42
for ASME Class 150 and Class 300. However, this specification does not cover those valves
specified for use in the aboveground or underground firewater or utilities services.
1.2 Valves covered by this practice shall conform to applicable requirements for flanged valves of
corresponding sizes in API 600 except as modified herein.
1.3 An asterisk (*) indicates that additional information is provided by ESSO in an addendum to this
specification.
1.4 A pound sign (#) indicates that ESSO review/approval is required before design is finalized or
equipment is purchased.
2.1 Table 1 lists the specification, codes and standards which shall be used with this specification.
2.2 The equipment and materials used shall conform to the latest editions, revisions and addenda of
the codes, standards and regulations listed in Table 1.
TABLE 1
3.1 Valves shall be for the outside screw-and-yoke (OS&Y) type, with rising stem, non-rising
handwheel and bolted bonnet.
* 3.2 The gate shall be of the solid wedge or double disc type, as specified.
* 3.3 Double disc valves, NPS 3 and larger, shall be provided with a body bleed connection at position
G or H per ASME B16.34, Figure 1, as specified.
R3 3.4 The joint between the body and bonnet shall be a flanged lap joint, except that on Class 150
valves it may be flat or raised face.
3.5 No welding or brazing shall be permitted on ductile iron. No repair, including plugging or
impregnation of defects found in ductile iron castings, is permitted.
MATERIALS
4.1 The minimum tensile strength of bronze alloy stem material shall be 414 MPa (60 000 psi).
4.2 Trim shall be 13 Cr, or forged steel with trim applied by weld deposit, or ductile iron with trim
mechanically applied. The attachment of trim or hardfacing by welding or brazing is not permitted
on ductile iron components.
4.3 The yoke bolted to the bonnet shall be ductile iron conforming to ASTM A395, ductile iron
conforming to ASTM A536 with 12% minimum elongation, cast steel conforming to ASTM A216 or
forged steel conforming to ASTM A105.
4.4 The gland shall be ductile iron, malleable iron, cast steel, forged steel, or rolled steel.
INSPECTION AND TESTING
5.1 High pressure closure tests per API 598 shall be conducted as follows:
TABLE 2
Note:
1. If leakage rate exceeds the limits of API 598, a minimum of 3 additional valves of each
size and type on the order shall be tested. If the leakage rate is exceeded on these
valves then all valves shall be tested.
2. A valve shall be considered as a prototype if:
a. The manufacturer has made significant changes to the standard design.
b. The manufacturing facility has no previous experience with the particular valve
model.

5.2 Low pressure seat tests shall be conducted with the air discharge slightly below a water surface to
facilitate determination of leakage rates.
5.3 The test procedure selected for High Pressure Closure and Low Pressure Closure Tests shall be
based on service applications and bleed valve provisions as follows:
R3 a. All valves specified to have double block and bleed capability with body bleeds in the G or
H position (ASME B16.34) shall be tested per API 598 par. 4.4.2b as double block and
bleed valves. Leakage shall be measured through the open bleed.
b. Valves without body bleeds shall be tested per API 598 par. 4.4.2a.
5.4 During testing, for handwheel and gear operated (manual) valves, closure torque shall not be
greater than that attainable by hand-tightening. For motor actuated valves, tests shall be
conducted with stem closure torque not exceeding the following:
5.5 Mechanical test on ductile iron made on keel block specimens will be considered representative of
the casting(s) only if the hardness of the test bar is within 15 HB of the casting(s) it represents.
For this purpose, test bar dimensions should be approximate the heaviest section of the
casting(s). The failure of a second test bar to meet this requirement will constitute cause for
rejection of the casting(s).
