3.0 DOCUMENTATION
3.1 The following data shall be furnished by the Motor Actuator Supplier
c. Friction factors, and packing gland thrust allowance used in sizing actuator.
4.0 MATERIALS
5.0 ACTUATOR
5.1 The actuator shall consist of a motor driver, reduction gearing, thrust bearing
where applicable, local position indicator, torque and limit switches, position
switches, space heater wired to terminals; all furnished as a self-contained, totally
enclosed unit.
5.2 Where an electro-hydraulic (EH) actuator is used, the electric motor shall be
directly coupled to the hydraulic motor, and the actuator shall have all items per
article 5.1 of this section plus the following for use:
1. Hydraulic oil shall be selected for the climatic conditions of the site.
3. The hand operator for the EH actuator shall be a manually operated rotary
hydraulic pump segregated from the electrically operated pump.
4. For power failure, hydraulic pressure preloading shall be sized to allow for
valve actuation of one cycle, that is to actuate the valve to the desired safe
position.
5.4 Gears shall provide an unseating torque at least 50% in excess of the valve
seating torque neglecting hammer blow effect.
5.5 The gearing shall have a built-in lost motion device that permits the motor to attain
full speed in a minimum travel of 135° before imparting a hammer blow to start the
valve in motion-either opening or closing direction.

Handwheel
5.6 The actuator shall be equipped with a permanently attached handwheel of the
automatic declutching type that precludes mechanical engagement of the
handwheel while the driver is in operation. The declutching device shall:
5.7 Handwheels for valves with EH actuators may be axial mounted and must be
between the valve and the actuator.
5.8 Handwheel drive shall permit the valve to be stroked open or closed in a time to
meet the project specification instrument data sheet.
5.10 Mechanical dial indication of valve position shall be incorporated in the actuator.
5.12 Lamp color indication of CLOSED or OPEN shall be provided as per the DBM. In
the intermediate position, a separate color lamp shall be furnished, per DBM.
5.13 Local manual switches shall be provided for OPEN-STOP-CLOSE and LOCAL-
REMOTE-OFF operation of the valve. The stop button shall have provision for
padlocking in the operated position. This shall prevent any electrical operation of
the valve. Switches and lamp indication for remote control stations will be supplied
by purchaser.
5.14 Position limit switches (proximity type) shall be provided at each end of travel for
remote indication and sequencing.
5.15 Open and close torque switches for electric drivers shall be provided with means to
prevent tripping on torque during initial unseating.
5.16 Torque and limit switches shall be easily adjustable without special tools or
removal of the switch assembly from the actuator. Repeatability of switch actuation
shall be ±5% of set point.
5.17 When specified, design shall also permit the addition of auxiliary switches, each
adjustable over full valve travel.

Actuator Performance
5.18 The actuator shall be sized to open or close the valve through its full stroke at
maximum specified process pressure drop and temperature. For all block-valve
services, the pressure drop used for actuator sizing shall be the higher design
pressure (of either side) of the piping to which it is attached.
5.19 Actuator stroking speed shall be adequate to move the valve as specified on the
instrumentation sheet.
5.21 The actuator shall be capable of functioning in the ambient temperature as outlined
in the project coordination document.
6.1 Motors and controls shall be listed and labelled by a CENELEC recognized test
authority for the specified associated hazardous area classification.
R3 6.2 Motors shall be 480 volt, 3 phase, 60 hz, high starting torque, single speed, with
lifetime pre-lubricated (sealed) ball bearings. Class "B" or "F" insulation shall be
provided.
6.6.1 Torque and Limit Switches shall be an integral part of the valve operator.
6.6.2 Four (4) Torque and Limit Switch trains are required .
R3 6.6.3 Each train will have 4 Limit Switches and provide 2 sets of “NO” and 2 sets
of ”NC” contacts with a breaking rating of 5 amps @ 480 volts or 0.5 amps
@ 125 VDC (inductive)

6.6.4 Torque and Limit Switches shall be easily adjustable without special tools
or removal of switch assy from actuator. Repatability of switch activation
shall be ±5% of set point.
6.6.5 Torque and Limit Switches design shall permit in place change of “NO”
and “NC” contracts by reconnecting wiring.
6.7 The valve and actuator mounting bracket shall be designed to withstand, without
damage, the stall torque of the actuator with the torque and limit switches
disconnected.
6.8 Space heater shall be provided in the switch compartment. Drains and breathers
shall be provided if the enclosure design is IEC 60529 IP 54. The drain shall be
located at the lowest point for any angle of actuator mounting.
6.9 Control circuit wiring shall be 16 AWG (1.31 mm2) stranded, Teflon insulated, with
a minimum rating of 6A. Power wiring shall be appropriate for motor size.
6.10 Terminal boxes shall be provided with a minimum of three conduit entries. Each
entry shall be supplied with a threaded metal conduit plug.
6.11 All electrical components shall be prewired by the actuator vendor to a legibly
marked terminal strip. Power and control wiring shall be segregated and insulated
from each other. All wiring shall be identified by the vendor, and access for
maintenance shall be provided.
6.12 Motor overload protection shall be provided by one or more winding temperature
detectors embedded in the motor winding. They must be capable of being
deactivated at the terminal board.
7.2 If load tests are specified, they shall be made prior to assembly of the actuator to
the valve. The test shall demonstrate the starting torque as well as speed of
closure under load.

7.3 Assembled valves shall be given an operational check to cover the full range of
open to closed positions.
8.1 Actuators shall have the following identifying information on a nameplate fastened
to the actuator. Adhesive fastening is not acceptable:
In the case of electric motor drivers, the above information may be combined with
the motor nameplate or data plate.
