3.1.4
SCOPE
This specification covers the design and application of temporary and permanent
strainers for the protection of mechanical equipment,
This specification does not cover metal screen or porous media filters with openings
finer than 150 Fm.
An astetisk (*) indicates that additional information is provided by ESSO in an
addendum to this specification,
‘A pound sign (#) indicates that ESSO review/approval is required before design is
finalized or equipment is purchased
‘SUMMARY OF ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
The design and application of strainers for mechanical equipment not specifically
covered by other specifications shall be per the requirements given herein.
‘Strainers shall be located between the inlet flange and the equipment isolation block
valve.
‘A valved pressure tap shall be provided both upstream and downstream of strainer to
monitor differential pressure across the strainer during plant start-up.
DESIGN
Common Requirements for Temporary and Permanent Strainers
‘Selection of strainer type and orientation of the strainer element relative to process
fiow shall ensure that collected solids of foreign material cannot fall back into the line.
Strainers shall be designed and fabricated to prevent their damage due to vibration,
differential pressure, pulsating flow or impact of objects. Screen of mesh size 20 of
finer shall be reinforced with perforated plate, or heavier screen and stee! bars.
Strainer bodies shall be suitable for the line service classification. Material for screen
and pertorated plate shall be per par. 4.1.
Mesh size of strainers shall be selected to stop all objects that could cause plugging
‘or mechanical damage.ESSO EXPLORATIONS

3.1.5 On pumps with NPSH margin less that 0.3 m (1 ft.) do not install strainer with a mesh
size less that 3 x 3.
°3.1.6 Strainer open area shall be not less than two times the inlet pipe cross-sectional area.
For suction lines to compressors in air service, this criteria shall be followed unless
otherwise specified.
3.1.7. Cone or basket type strainers shall be provided with identification tabs that protrude
from the holding pipe flanges.
3.1.8 For "TEE" type strainers, guide rods and shelf rods supporting the strainer element
shall be sized per Table 1.

Additional Requirements for Temporary Strainers
3.2.1. Temporary strainers shall be used during line flushing and initial operating periods of
new and revamped plants, unless:
a. Permanent strainers are specified.
b. Piping is accessible for internal visual inspection throughout its entire length
and is clean and ree of foreign objects.
3.2.2 Temporary strainers shall be in accordance with Figure 1.
3.2.3 Piping layout shall permit insertion and removal of the temporary strainer without
disturbing equipment alignment. Pipe fittings such as Tees, wyes or fabricated piping
‘spool pieces are acceptable for this purpose.
Permanent Strainers
3.3.1. The design and location of permanent strainers shall permit cleaning without removing
the strainer body.ESSO EXPLORATION & =

3.3.2. Strainers shall be either Y or a commercial basket type, depending on which is more
economical. Fabricated strainers can be used if there is a significant cost or delivery
advantage.
3.3.3. Arrangement of strainers shall permit cleaning without interrupting the pumping
service. For installation equipped with a spare pump this shall be accomplished by
providing @ permanent strainer in the suction line of each pump. For pumps without
spares, twin strainers or self-cleaning strainers may be used, as applicable.
3.3.4 Positive displacement and turbine meters shall be provided with permanent strainers
‘on the upstream side.
3.3.5 Fuel oil supply lines shail be provided with suitable dual filters installed in parallel in
the main supply line or the branch line.
3.3.6 Self-cleaning strainers (i.e., *Y" or "Tee" types) shall be provided with valved
blowdown connections.SSO EXPLORATION &
