SPECIFICATION Rev. | Oct. 1995
SCOPE
1.1. This specification covers mandatory requirements governing the protection of
equipment, piping and insiruments against the effects of ambient temperature
including hydrate formation, condensation, viscosity change and pour point
suppression,
1.2 An asterisk (*) indicates that additional information is provided by ESSO in an
addendum to this specification.
1.3 A pound sign (#) indicates that ESSO review/approval is required before design is
finalized or equipment is purchased.
REQUIREMENTS FOR PROTECTION AGAINST HIGH AMBIENT TEMPERATURES:
2.1 Overpressure protection against liquid thermal expansion due to solar radiation in
equipment and piping is covered in ECS 3-2-4, Pressure Relieving Systems.
#2.2._ All instruments shall be suitable for the high ambient temperature in the Chad area or
installed in suitable air conditioned rooms or enclosures. The use ot air conditioned
enclosures shall be approved by ESSO.
2.3. Asa minimum, all instruments installed out doors shall have a sun shade to prevent
temperature rise due to direct sunlight per ECS 15-0-100, Instrumentation General
Specification
REQUIREMENTS FOR HEAT TRACING
Process Piping
3.1.1. Reciprocating compressor suction lines between the knockout drum and the
compressor shall be heat traced and insulated if ambient temperature is below the
dew point of the gas at compressor suction.
3.1.2 Intermittently used process piping containing liquids such as tars or chemicals, which
will congeal during nonflowing conditions, shall be provided with valves for venting and
draining, blowing out with alr or flushing with light stock in preference to heat tracing,
3.1.3 Process and/or associated piping subject to auto-refrigerated releases which may
cause freezing of line shall be heat traced to the extent necessary to prevent line
blockage.
Note: When piping the blow out discharges into tankage, venting capacity shall be
provided to prevent pressurizing the tankageESSO EXPLORATION & 5

Pressure Relieving Systems
3.2.1. Pressure relieving systems shall be heat traced where the inlet and outlet lines of
pressure relief (PR) devices may become plugged due to wax deposits or the
congealing of viscous fluids at ambient temperatures.
Closed Drain Headers
3.3.1 Closed drain headers shall be heat traced where piping may become plugged due to:
a. Wax deposits
b. —Congealing viscous fluids
c. _Auto-refrigerated releases to the system, such as flashing propane, which may
cause freezing in the line.
Instruments and Associated Piping
3.4.1 Instruments and instrument piping shall be heat traced and/or insulated in accordance
with Table 1. The instrument mechanism and indicator portions (Le. electronic
capsule) of the transmitters shall be kept within the manufacturer's recommended
temperature rating
*3.4.2. When specified, protective heating of lead fines shall be installed in a manner which
will prevent the liquid from overhe:
1g and boiling away.
3.4.3 Locally mounted pressure gauges and instruments, with seals required for corrosion
protection, shall be heat traced (if the seal or process fluid would freeze, congeal, or
be damaged at low temperature).
3.4.4 When using electric tracers on instruments which have blow down facilities, care
should be taken in selecting cable material to assure it can withstand the maximum
process exposure temperature with the tracer turned ON or OFF during blow down.
3.4.5 When parallel and adjacent lead lines for differential pressure instruments are heat
‘raced, they shall have common heating and insulation to maintain the same
temperature in both lines,
3.4.6 When capillary tubing is required to protect the instrument with diaphragm seals from
radiant heat, the capillary shall be shaded from direct sun and temperature
compensated.ESSO EXPLORATION & =

Notes:
1. Heat tracing shall be electric tracing,
2. Care must be taken to keep electronics within the manufacturer's
recommended temperature rating,
3. Heat tracing of the instrument may be accomplished with a prefabricated
insulated enclosure as long as area classification inside the enclosure is
satisfied.
4, Allvalve and/or instrument manifold handles shall not be insulated, and shall
be left exposed, to allow operability.
5. If the process fluid is likely to plug, then use a diaphragm seal.SSO EXPLORATION & —

SPECIFICATION
Preferred method is to choose an instrument technology that does not require
tracing
Process Vessels
3.5.1. Process vessels containing fiuids which may congeal during dormant periods shall be
insulated and, if necessary, heat traced.
3.5.2 Heat exchangers (shell and tube or ait cooled) containing liquids which may congeal
at ambient temperature shall be capable of being drained when not in service.
Machinery and Associated Piping
3.6.1 Pumps and associated piping shall be protected as required by the nature of fluids
handled and duration of anticipated non-operating periods. Circulating fluid from an
active pump through a non-operating pump is a preferred practice for pumps handling
viscous fluids.ESSO EXPLORATION &
