Local Standards, which yield comparable quality to the above Standards, may be substituted if approved by ESSO. 3.0 DESIGN 34 32 33 34 35 38 37 For structural elements continuously exposed to heat above maximum ambient temperature, allowable design stresses shall be reduced in proportion to reductions in yield strength of the steel at the design temperature. For structural elements exposed to severe corrosion or wear conditions, special materials, protection, or material thickness allowance shall be employed instead of decreasing allowable stresses. Design loads shall conform to ECS 4-1-3. Contractor shall design erection clips for field welded connections. All work covered by this specification shall conform to AISC $302 and AISC $335. The minimum design capacity of all bolted, or mixed bolted and welded, framed beam connections shall be the member end reaction shown on the design drawings. If the member end reaction is not shown on the design drawings, the minimum design capacity shall be determined from the AISC M016 Part 4, Table I or Table Ill connection capacity using the maximum possible number of rows ‘of 20 mm (3/4 in.) A324 bolts for each beam depth. The minimum design capacity of all welded framed beam connections shall be the member end reaction shown on the design drawings. if the member end reaction is not shown on the design drawings, the minimum design capacity shall be determined from the AISC M016 Part 4, Table IV connection capacity using the maximum possible tabulated angle length with the associated minimum tabulated welds and angle thicknesses, but in no case less than 26,7 KN (6 kips). A copy of the Structural Steel and Fasteners Manufacturer's traceable mill test certificates, which include heat numbers or other identifications, shall be made available for ESSO review. 4.4 Material shall be kept free from dirt, grease, and other foreign matter and shall be protected from corrosion. 4.5 The top surface of welded steel bar grating and grating stair treads shall be serrated unless specified as plain. No substitutions of materials, or shop splices shall be permitted without written authorization from ESSO. All beams, except cantilevers, shall be fabricated with natural mill camber in the up position. Fabrication shall not exceed the tolerances specified in AISC $302. Radi for re-entrant flame cuts shall be a minimum of 19 mm (3/4 in.) except in small members. Shearing, flame cutting, and chipping shall be done carefully and accurately. Sole plates of beams and girders shall have full contact with the flanges. Stiffeners shall have full contact with flanges and shall be fitted neatly between the flanges and girders. Fillers under end angles shall not project beyond the backs of the angles, The clearance between the ends of spliced web plates shall not exceed 6 mm.(1/4 in.). Only high-strength bolts installed as friction-type connections prior to welding may be considered as sharing the stress with the welds. Holes shall be drilled, sub-punched and reamed, or punched at right angles to the surface of the metal and shall not be made or enlarged by burning. Holes in base or bearing plates shall be drilled. Outside burrs resulting from drilling or reaming operations shall be removed All welding inspectors shall be qualified and certified as AWS Certified Welding Inspectors in accordance with the provisions of AWS D1.1 or AWS QC1 or as approved by ESSO. All welding procedures and individual welders shall be qualified in accordance with the requirements of AWS 01.1 Field welding shall be performed by the shielded meta-arc or submerged arc welding methods only. Structural members shall not be welded while under stress. Erection clips shall be provided for field welded connections. ESSO EXPLORATIONS PRODUCTION CHAD INC. Seal welds may be 3 mm (1/8 in.) minimum filet weld. The use of stitch welds or back to back gusset plates requires ESSO's approval. The minimum number of bolts in a framed beam connection shall be two bolts per clip angle. Mechanical galvanized bolts or nuts shall not be interchanged with hot-dipped galvanized nuts or bolts, respectively. High strength bolts shall not be reused after tensioning. Double angle bracing shall have bolted fillers spaced in accordance to AISC ‘Specifications. ‘Structural steel for secondary structures (such as stair treads and stringers, railings, ladders, purlins and girts) shall be bolted with machine bolts conforming to ASTM A307 and fully tightened. High strength bolted connections shall be bearing type with threads included in the shear plane (A325-N). Slip-critical type (A325-SC) shall be used when noted on the design drawings. Sag rods shall have nuts and washers above and below the web of the girt or purin. Beveled washers shall be installed under the heads of bolts or nuts when bearing on the tapered flanges of structural members when such bolts are ‘employed to support equipment. Beveled washers shall also be used to provide flat bearing for diagonal tie-rod bracing. Hardened washers shall be provided under all bolt heads and nuts adjacent to any ply with oversized or slotted holes. For standard holes, a minimum of one hardened washers shall be supplied with each bolt For framed beam bearing connections, short slotted holes are permitted in the outstanding leg of clip angles. For slotted holes, the long direction of the slot shall be perpendicular to the load direction. All slotted or oversized hole dimensions shall be per Table 1 of AISC $229. If direct tension indicator washers are used, they shall conform to ASTM F959 or ASTM F959M, and shall be installed according to the manufacturer's published specifications. Bracing Connections: All bracing end connections shall have a minimum of two bolts per ‘connection, b. All gusset and stiffener plates shall be 10 mm (3/8 in.) minimum thickness, ¢ _ All vertical bracing and knee bracing shall have gusset plates on column centeriines, unless otherwise noted on the design drawings. 5.21 All bolt holes shall be standard holes with a diameter 1.6 mm (1/16 in) larger than the nominal bolt diameter, unless otherwise specified on the design drawings. +#5.22 Structural steel must be fabricated in either all English units or all metric units ‘The sizes of bolts shall be in the same units as the steel that it connects. Mixed units are not allowed unless approved by ESSO. 5.23 Substitutions for USA specifications shall be in accordance with ECS18-1-1 GALVANIZING 6.1 Unless otherwise specified by Esso, all structural steel including bolts, grating, floor plate, and stair treads, except ASTM A490 bolts, crane rails, and DTI washers, shall be hot-dip galvanized in accordance with ASTM A123 for steel shapes and plates and ASTM B695 for bolts, nuts, and washers. The following ate general fabrication requirements for galvanizing: a, Whenever practical, cutting, drilling and welding shall be performed prior to galvanizing, Weld slag shall be removed before galvanizing. b. The edges of tightly contacting surfaces shall be completely seal welded, cc. Procedures shall be followed to safeguard against embrittlement and warpage per ASTM A143 and ASTM A348. Fabrication details shail meet the requirements of ASTM A385 to allow for the creation of high quality zine coatings. 6.2. Galvanizing of steel hardware shall be as follows: a. Nuts shall be tapped oversize and wax dipped in accordance with ASTM ‘A563 by the Manufacturer and shipped in the same container with the bolts. b. _ Nut threads shall be retapped after hot-dip galvanizing to provide proper fit c. Direct tension indicators shall be mechanically galvanized according to the requirements of Class 50 of ASTM B65. d. Mechanically galvanized bolts and nuts shall not be intermixed with hot dip galvanized nuts and bolts. 6.3. Repair of galvanized steel shall be as follows: a. Any damage to galvanizing shail be repaired in accordance with ASTM A780, b, Cold repair using an organic zinc rich coating is allowed if the total damaged area is within the limits set by Section 4.6 of ASTM A123. The dry film thickness shall be 2 to 3 mils and contain a minimum of 94 percent zinc dust by weight. ¢ Hot repairs shall be made in the shop if the total damaged area exceeds the limits set by Section 4.6 of ASTM A123. # — d._Correction of excessive warpage, exceeding ASTM A6 criteria, shall be by press straightening when possible. The application of localized heating to straighten requires ESSO's approval. fe. When surface defects exceed 2 percent of a member's area, the defects shall be repaired by redipping the member in the zinc bath. ESSO EXPLORATIONS PRODUCTION CHAD INC. FABRICATION AND ERECTION Page 11 of 13, SPECIFICATION Rev.2 Aug, 1997 ECs 41-2 STRUCTURAL STEEL DESIGN 1 7.0 Changes shown by => ERECTION 7A 72 73 74 75 76 a77 78 79 Erection shall be in accordance with the AISC $335, AISC $302, “Code of Federal Regulations” OSHA Part 1910 and Part 1926, and any applicable local regulations or codes and the construction drawings. Base plates and bearing plates shall be supported and aligned on steel wedges and shims or as indicated on the drawings. After the supported members have been plumbed and properly positioned and the anchor nuts snugged, the entire bearing area under the plate shall be filled with a suitable grout. Refer to ECS. 4-10-2, Anchor bolts shall be tightened to fully develop their required design tension only after grouting, Fit-up bolts and drift pins shall not be used to bring improperly fabricated members and parts into place (springing). Drift pins shail not be driven with such force as to deform adjacent metal areas. Enlargement of holes shall be by reaming or drilling only. Flame cutting, burning, gouging, chipping or drift punching shall not be permitted. Erection of steel joists shall conform to the requirements of the Steel Joist Institute. Bracing and Bridging connections shall be bolted. Rod bracing shall not be spliced by welding. Use of power driven or power actuated fasteners in the diagonal and bottom chord members of the joists is not permitted Temporary erection loads or permanent loads shall not be placed on any incomplete portions of the structure being erected unless the Contractor can ‘demonstrate by analysis that the contemplated action is safe. Any damage caused during erection shall be reported to ESSO. Contractor shall submit procedures for corrective measures to ESSO for approval. Loose timbers, metal sheeting, bolt buckets, tools, debris, and temporary scaffoiding shall be kept or removed from work areas. The Contractor shail be responsible for securing all equipment and materials within the Contractor's care, custody, and control during the erection operation, ‘The Contractor shall maintain the job site in clean and safe condition at all times, and shall properly dispose of, off premises, all crating, waste materials, and other refuse which has accumulated as a result of Contractor's activities under this specification. STRUCTURAL STEEL DESIGN 7.40 7.41 7.12 #713 #714 7.45 7.16 77 7.18 7.19 Changes shown by => ‘The Contractor shall at all times be responsible for the adequacy and installation of any temporary bracing or guy cabies required to counteract loadings imposed during erection. This responsibility shall also include temporary bracing required to ensure safe and stable conditions of partially completed structural assemblies, The structure shall be plumbed, leveled, and braced before any final bolted or welded connections are made. When assembled, all join surfaces, including those adjacent to the bolt heads, nuts or washers, shall be free of burrs, dirt and other foreign materials that would prevent solid seating of parts. No packing, shimming, filing, or wedging shall be permitted to correct faulty work, unless approved by ESSO. One (1) filler plate up to 3mm (1/8 in.) thickness may be used as required in spaces between members to be bolted. Filler plate requirements greater than ‘3mm (1/8 in.) shall be submitted to ESSO for approval. Welds to connection plates embedded in concrete shail be deposited in a sequence which will minimize distortion of the embedment to + 3 mm (1/8 in.) of flat or true. The Contractor shall fasten grafting as specified on the design drawings. A minimum of four (4) fasteners per panel shall be used, Floor and roof deck sheets shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturers installation instructions. All sags, deformations, holes, and other egularities shall be repaired by the Contractor. Where damage has occurred to shop applied coatings on metal deck, field touch-up shall be in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. All shear stud attachments shall be welded in strict accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations for welding procedure and welding equipment. When tow or more stud welding guns are operated from the same power source, the Contractor shall interlock the guns so that only one gun can be operated at a time to ensure that the power source has fully recovered from making one weld before another weld is started.
