Introduction

PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presents the background and purpose of the study, theoretical and

conceptual framework, and statements of the problem, hypothesis, assumptions, scope

and limitation, and definition of terms.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

In today’s ever-changing economy is in a great suffer of pandemic. The

researchers are challenged to study facts about the effect of pandemic in every

livelihood program. A pandemic is a disease outbreak that spreads across countries or

continents. It affects more people and takes more lives than epidemic. There are more

than 10 of the worst pandemic in History and one of the deadliest pandemic of the

modern age is Influenza or the H1N1 influenza known as the Spanish flu. The estimates

of mortality ranging from 17 million to 100 million from estimated 500 million infections

globally. The most recent pandemic is the Corona virus disease (COVID-19) in the year

of 2019-present.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) an infectious disease caused by the Severe

Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus2 (SARS – CoV2). The novel virus was first

identified in Wuhan China in December 2019. A lockdown in Wuhan and other cities

failed to contain the outbreak, and its spread around the world. Since 2021, variants of

the virus have emerged and become dominant in many countries with the Delta, Alpha,

and Beta variants being the most virulent. As of 16 September 2021, more than 226
million cases and 4.66 million deaths have been confirmed, making it one of the

deadliest pandemics in history.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) most people infected with

the virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without

requiring special treatment. However, there are seriously ill people who need medical

attention. The virus can spread from an infected persons mouth, or nose in small liquid

particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing or breath. There are many symptoms in

this virus and the most common are flu-like symptoms such as fever, dry cough, and

shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, loss of taste or smell, headache, and sore

throat. Symptoms typically appear within 2 days to 14 days after exposure. When these

symptoms appear within these days you need to consult the nearest medical clinic.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19 we need to follow the Health Protocols such

as maintain a safe distance from others, wear face masks in public, clean your hands

often, get vaccinated when it's your turn.

The impact of COVID-19 pandemic on livelihood, the people of Mabuhay Home

Barangay Pantok and Darangan Binangonan Rizal were all affected from their work,

because of economic failure. Many establishments were closed, and other commercial

businesses like, beauty salons, laundry shops, convenience stores, fast food chains,

they limit the number of people who enter, and work for them. Some vendors were also

affected by this pandemic, because of the Government announcement to implement the

lockdown in some particular places.

The purpose of the study is to know how COVID-19 affects the lifestyle in every

livelihood program that is used to provide our daily needs and expenses. To know what

is the effective way to survive in this pandemic that really shut us down.

This research wants to help and inspire people that there’s a way to provide, to

survive, or meet the daily expenses using creativity and resourcefulness at the comfort

of their home. We can all survive in this pandemic through helping each other. In any

kind that is useful. We need to trust ourselves that there is nothing impossible in this

pandemic to survive, if we will follow the rules and regulations, obey the safety

protocols. Being a student, this research is important to us so that we can contribute our

knowledge by helping others to understand what is COVID-19 in our lives and

livelihood.

Theoretical Framework

This research was based on the study of Keynes. It is also known as Keynesian

Economic Theory. John Keynes was the one who came up with the idea that in times of

unemployment, this economist and his school maintained that government involvement

could stabilize the economy by improving employment and production levels by

increasing government spending. In addition this definition built upon Chambers and

Conway’s earlier definition and the subsequent work of Rennie and Singh (1996) and

Scoones (1998) through adding a natural resource dimension:

A livelihood consists of the capabilities, assets (including both material and social

resources) and activities required for a means of living. A livelihood is sustainable when
it can cope with and recover from stresses and shocks (environmental, economic and

social) and maintain or improve its capabilities and assets both now and in the future,

while not undermining the natural resource base. (Carney, 1998, p. 4). The sustainable

livelihood framework is suitable for this study, the reason being that analyses of

livelihoods using this framework are usually done on entire households. This SLF

helps to organize the factors that constrain or enhance livelihood opportunities.

Darangan Binangonan, Rizal

Benefiting the study are various sectors that follows:

The Family/Householders

that suffer from the shortage in providing their daily needs and expenses because of the

lack of job/work that is allowed to operate in this pandemic. Any techniques in creativity

and resourcefulness of others that help them to survive and provide daily needs and

expenses will help to survive the reverse growth of the economy.

The LGU’s (Local Government Units)

the population of the householders/family that needs a government to support their

financials in providing daily needs and expenses. It will also lessen people without

conduct a study related to this topic.

Scope and Delimitations of the Study

The general intent of the study is to focus on the effects of this pandemic (Covid-

19) in the livelihood of the householders aged 18 – 60 years old to meet their daily

needs. This data collection will be conducted to 100 respondents of householders in
