BAB 1.

PRELIMINARY

Background

Effervescent tablets are tablets that produce gas when placed in water. Effervescent
tablets consist of a mixture of sodium bicarbonate with citric acid or tartaric acid which when
immersed in water will form foam or CO2 (carbon dioxide) gas. The gas that comes out is
carbon dioxide gas produced from the reaction between organic acids and carbonate
derivatives. This carbon dioxide gas helps accelerate the disintegration of the tablet and
increases the solubility of the active substance. In addition, this carbon dioxide gas also gives
a fresh taste as well as carbonated canned drinks. In addition to producing a clear solution,
these tablets also produce a pleasant taste due to the presence of carbonates which help
improve the taste of certain drugs.

Effervescent tablets require special working conditions and methods in their

manufacture because in these tablets there are two ingredients that cannot be combined,
namely sodium bicarbonate and organic acid because it will form carbon dioxide gas. The
reaction of these two ingredients will be accelerated in the presence of water, so the
effervescent tablet during the production process reaches the consumer's hands and should
not come into contact with water.
