Key Words: Silica gel, glyoxime, transition metals, extraction

In this work the aim to substitute the extraction procedures with the more
advantageous solid phase extraction (SPE) and separation procedures leads us to
study basic properties of modified silica gel supported materials, inorganic chemically
active beads (ICABs). Grafting of various organic complexing moieties on silica gel
has become an increasingly important technique because of its potential application
in the field of catalysis [1], analytical and chromatographic separations [2] and
removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions [3].
A new modified silica gel material with chemically bound glyoxime was tested
as transition metal ions adsorption and their basic characteristics (thermodynamics,
stability and physical description) studied. This inorganic chemically active beads
(ICABs) are suitable for the solid phase extraction (SPE) and separation of the
transition elements. The solid-liquid extraction procedure, using the modified silica
gel as the adsorbent using metal picrates, was worked out and found efficient.
This modified silica gel beads was used for solid-liquid extraction of Co(II),
Zn(II), Cu(II), Ni(II) and Hg(II) ions at 298.15 K, 303.15 K, 308.15 K and 313.15 K.
Glyoxime groups make a strong complex with transition metal ions in aqueous phase.
Extraction studies were repeated at different adsorbent weights, too. Metal picrates
were determined at 358 nm by Shimadzu 160A model UV-vis spectrophotometer.
Adsorption rates were changed as follows: Co(II)>Hg(II)>Zn(II)>Ni(II)>Cu(II). The
some thermodynamic parameters (free energy, entropy and enthalpy) were
calculated from experimental data.
In the result, it was observed that the modification product of silica gel is more
useful from other ligands (only glyoxime etc.) for solid-liquid extraction. The chemical
and physical adsorptions occur in which is used modified silica gel in the solid-liquid
extraction of transition metal ions. In addition, it was observed that the temperature
and adsorbent weights are very important at the extraction study.
