1. What are the purpose of index?


- To minimize the ime and effort in finding the information Maximize the searching
success of a user Construct representations of documents in a form that is suitable for the
users to browse through in different forms. It provides a references to the users so they
may find a new words or new vocabulary, and they can locate the index word easily. It
helps find the word in the book.
2. What are the functions of index?

- Identify documentary units that treat particular topics of process particular features
indicate all important topics or features of documentary units in accordance with the level
of exhaustivity appropriate for the index discriminate between major and minor
treatments of particular topics or manifestations of particular feature provide access to
topics or features using the terminology of prospective users provide access to topics or

3.1 Book Index?
- Alphabetical list of words at the back of a book that gives the exact page location of the
subject or name associated with each word.

‣ Collects the different ways of wording the the same concept
‣ Provides a well-worded sub-entries
