Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Physical Science Quizizz

Content Area: Physical Science
Grade Level(s): 2
Content Standard Addressed:
S2P1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the properties of matter and changes that occur
in objects.
a. Ask questions to describe and classify different objects according to their physical properties.
(Clarification statement: Examples of physical properties could include color, mass, length,
texture, hardness, strength, absorbency, and flexibility.)

Technology Standard Addressed:

5. Digital citizenship
Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical
behavior.
b. Exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and productivity

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☐ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☒ Other: Quizizz
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable): https://quizizz.com/admin/quiz/615ce29ee7b51f001d11fbb5
Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:
☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☒ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☐ Teacher-Paced ☒ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☒ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☒ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Prior to the SRT activity there will be a time period of multiple lessons being taught. For example throughout
the week students will learn about the physical properties of matter through many different representations

of information. By the end of the lesson time (end of the week) students will take the quiz on Quizizz for
myself, the teacher, to assess what they have learned.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☒ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☒ Discussion starter ☒ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: The students will receive a last-minute quick
review of information learned from the time period as a whole class. Students would be able to go onto their
devices or computers to answer the 8 questions individually at their own pace.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☐ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☒ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):
https://quizizz.com/admin/quiz/615ce29ee7b51f001d11fbb5
Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
☐ Yes ☐ No
☒ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☐ Yes
☒ No
Why or why not?
I created open-ended questions for students to answer and with that, students are expected to give an
answer and explain. Some question allow students to give an answer and back it up with an explanation using
critical thinking skills then they can be correct. Some questions do need definite answers such as #6 and #8.
Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?
After the SRT activity I, the teacher, will assess the data received from students. If little to no students have
had some difficulty answering the quiz, we would have a whole class discussion where the students can
answer questions on the quiz. They can discuss their different answer in partners or small groups to reiterate
information from the lessons throughout the time period. If many of the students did not quite grasp the
concept I, the teacher, would re-assess the lessons used throughout the week and tweak them or find new
lessons to re-teach to the class.
How will the data be used? Data collected will be the open-ended questions. What students grasped the
concept in their answers and what students didn’t? Is the number of students not able to explain their
thinking thoroughly significantly? The results will not be used for a grade but for data that can be used to
gauge student comprehension. How will I the teacher tweak my lessons in the future? Students after taking
the quiz will have the chance to discuss their thinking with their peers as a whole class discussion. I’ll be able
to see which students are able to explain their ideas and which students are quite able to. If a small number
of students are not able to, I will take them into a small group and present new different information in a
form of web-based instructional tools, readings, or in-class interactive activity.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. Using Quizizz as a tool that I have not used before.
Having a student response tool is something that I have personally not tried to use for my students and have

not used something like it for a formative assessment in my K-12 school years. I hope to learn how to be a
better teacher for my students whether if it is to tweak my lessons or change my lessons completely. I hope
my students can learn how to use critical thinking skills, accountability, and to actively engage in their
learning.

Reflective Practice: I feel the lesson idea can impact student learning by having them actively engage in their
learning and use their critical thinking skills. I created this lesson as a way to gauge student learning after a
lesson. The teacher, myself, can use this tool and data to assess how students are grasping not only this
concept of physical science but can be used for many others.
