Overview of Windows NT Server Installation

NT server 4.0 installs in 4 phases:

Phase 0- Preparation for NT server installation

Phase 1- Gathering information about your computer

Phase 2- Windows NT networking

Phase 3- Finishing setup

Phase 0

• Phase 0 begins the NT installation.

• The installation program tries to detect which hardware your computer is using.

• It tries to detect video adapter, any mass storage device.

• Once it finds them, installation program asks the installer on which partition NT should
be installed.

• Which file system should be used,in which directory the NT system files should be stored
Phase 1

• During this phase ,you will be prompted for the following information:

• Name and organization: This information is used for licensing purpose only, username is
required but organization is optional.

• Licensing mode

• Computer Name: unique computer name on the network.

• Type of server: Primary domain controller(PDC),Backup domain controller(BDC),or
member server.

• Administrator Password: password can be up to 14 characters long.

• Emergency Repair Disk(ERD): It could be useful in fixing system problems later on.ERD’s
are machine specific.

• Optional Components:like accessories,communiction,games multimedia etc.

Phase 2

• It prompts you to supply the following information regarding network configuration:

• Direct or Dial-In Connection to network

• Optional install of IIS

• Adapter and Protocols-based on your selection phase 2 will load the appropriate drivers

• Additional network services

• Domain

Phase 3

• In the last phase of installation,NT requires the following information in order to

complete configuration:

• Date and time zone

• Video driver

NT server roles

• NT server can be assigned one of three roles:

• PDC-Primary domain controller

• BDC-Backup domain controller

• Member server

PDC

• PDC holds the directory database(SAM-security accounts manager)for the entire

domain.

• It is the only server that can make changes to the database.

• It is the first NT server to be installed and is assigned a domain security ID(SID)used to
define domain.

• PDC’s SAM database is read-write.

• All administration for the domain takes place through PDC

• Once changes are made at PDC,the changes are then copied to the BDC.

• By default the changes to the SAM database are sent out every 5 minutes.

• After synchronization is complete, BDC’s have an exact duplicate on the PDC’s SAM
database.

BDC

• BDC’s are NT servers that have been configured as a domain controller server and
receive copies of the PDC’s SAM database.

• It serves two main functions:

-allow user to log on and authenticate to either PDC or BDC (Load Balancing)

-used for fault tolerance

• You can have as many BDCs as you need

• In case PDC becomes unavailable,It can become PDC

A workgroup is a small group of computers on a network that enables users to work together
and does not support centralized administration.
A domain is a logical grouping of computers on a network that has a central security database
for storing security information. Centralized security and administration are important for
computers in a domain because they enable an administrator to easily manage computers that
are geographically distant from each other. A domain is administered as a unit with common
rules and procedures. Each domain has a unique name, and each computer within a domain has
a unique name.

If you’re a stand-alone computer, or if you don’t know what to enter, or if you don’t have the
