Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Learning Colors and Shapes

Content Area: Mathematics – Geometric Shapes; Science – Naming and Recognizing
Colors
Grade Level(s): Kindergarten/Pre-K
Content Standard Addressed:
MGSEK.G.2 Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size.
VAK.CR.2 Create works of art based on selected themes.
VAKAR.1 Discusses his or her own artwork and the artwork of others
h. Correctly names colors.
i. Lists primary colors.

Technology Standard Addressed:

Creativity and innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and
develop innovative products and processes using technology.
a. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes
b. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression
c. Use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues
d. Identify trends and forecast possibilities

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☐ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☒ Other: BLOOKET
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☒ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☒ Phone ☐
Tablet (such as iPad)
☒ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☐ Teacher-Paced ☒ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☐ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating

☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any
“Voice or Choice” during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The
project is student-driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the
topic of study and determining the technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the
standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.

☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing
student work and promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project
on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing
via an outside source.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity
and how you will introduce the SRT activity.
Prior to the SRT activity, I will teach my students (infants) the color wheel, or just the basic
colors. The basic colors are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. I will then teach them all
the most used shapes, like square, circle, triangle, et cetera. After I believe that my students
have a certain mastery to this information, I will introduce the SRT activity. The activity is a
Blooket that reviews and demonstrates the colors and shapes just learned.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☒ To
illuminate common misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for
purpose of differentiation and mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of
content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☒ Other (please
explain): Learn about a new topic (color and shapes)

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

During the SRT activity, I will stand at the front and aid my students in understanding the
Blooket. If they have trouble, I can give simple hints that will guide them to the correct
answer. The activity gives them a minute to figure out and choose the correct answer, so if
there is any confusion, they can ask for a hint. All students need for this activity is a device
(phone, computer, etc.). The Blooket has less than twenty questions, so this student response
activity should take no more than ten minutes. If I see any misunderstandings and confusion
within my students, I will re-teach or review the material, and try another type of tool to help
them comprehend.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list
them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of
the questions and display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No

Why or why not?

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

When I see that my students mastered their shapes and colors, I can start introducing them
to more complex colors and shapes. Some other colors could be indigo, pink, turquoise,
cerulean, magenta, et cetera. Other shapes can be trapezoids, hexagons, octagons, et cetera.
If I see that my students have not mastered the material, I will review and ensure that they
100% understand the shapes and colors that were taught.

How will the data be used?

The data that will be collected will be a full comprehension of shapes and colors. I will use
this data to analyze the effectiveness of my teaching concepts and my student’s
understanding of the information. My students can use this Blooket at home, and the parents
can see how their children are progressing in the classroom. I don’t think that I will discuss
the data with the whole class, but if I see that a singular student is struggling, I can discuss
with them a different method that could be used to help them gain an understanding. Lastly,
I will use the data to differentiate instruction. If my methods were not useful to the majority
of the class, I will rethink my teaching methods and find a new way to deliver the material
effectively.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.
My personal goal for this activity is making sure my students know their shapes and colors.
As a teacher, I will be trying student response tools to see if they are needed and useful in my
classroom. I hope that this activity, Blooket, teaches me that student response and
assessment tools are effective in my classroom, and can be another outlet of interactive
teaching for my students. I hope these tools will keep my students engaged and interested in
the material, while giving them a chance to be competitive and have fun.
Reflective Practice:
I believe that the activities that I created can impact student learning by giving the students a
chance to be connected through technology and have a chance at interactive learning. To
further extend the lesson, I can add more colors, shapes, and clip art pictures that can add
more examples of the material. As an introductory lesson, I would give my students Play-
Doh. With this, I will model how to make a shape with the Play-Doh and then have everyone
make the shape. Other technology tools that I could use in the classroom could be
educational videos or songs from YouTube that correlate with shapes and colors.
