ABSTRACT

Elva Rezi.2021. THE INFLUENCE OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE ON

SPEAKING SKILL AT EIGHT SEMESTER STUDENTS OF ENGLISH
DEPARTMENT OF UNIVERSITY OF PASIR PENGARAIAN.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is an

influence of students' emotional intelligence on speaking ability. This
research was conducted in 2021. The sample who took part in this study
were students in the English education program at Pasir Pengaraian
University.
The research method used in this research is experimental.
Sampling using total sampling technique. The sample in this study amounted
to 23 students consisting of 14 regular class students and 9 non-regular
class students.
Based on the tests given, the researcher found that the average
score of students on emotional intelligence (variable X) and speaking ability
(variable Y) had a significant value of simple linear regression of 0.000 <
0.05. These data indicate that the variable X has a significant effect on the
variable Y, which means that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the
alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It can be concluded that emotional
intelligence has a significant impact on the speaking ability of Semester 8
students in the English education study program at Pasir Pengaraian
University.

ABSTRAK

Elva Rezi.2021. PENGARUH KECERDASAN EMOSI TERHADAP

KEMAMPUAN BERBICARA PADA MAHASISWA SEMESTER 8 DI
PROGRAM STUDI BAHASA INGGRIS UNIVERSITAS PASIR
PENGARAIAN.

kemampuan berbicara (variabel Y) memiliki nilai signifikan regresi linear
sederhana sejumlah 0.000 < 0.05.

1. INTRODUCTION
English has some skills. There are 4 skills that should be learned. It is speaking,
listening, writing, and reading. Studies report that most language learners are concerned
about making pronunciation or grammar mistakes when participating in classes because
they fear teachers’ negative judgment or their peers’ mockery (Mendez & Pena,
2013:37). Emotional control is very important. It is very important for us to have the
ability to express and also control our own emotion.
1.1.Setting of the Research
Emotional intelligence is important in academic achievement.
1.1.1. Limitation of the Research
In this research, the researcher focuses on the influence of emotional intelligence
(EI) on students’ speaking skill at fourth semester of english department of
university of pasir pengaraian.
1.1.2. Formulation of The Research
The formulation of the research: Is there any influence of emotional intelligence
on students’ speaking skill at eight semester of English department of university of
Pasir Pengaraian?
2. LITERATURE REVIEW
2.1.Emotional Intelligence
Everything that people do is consist of emotion. Even if it is action, judgment,
and decisions. Mayer and Salovey (1990:11) state that “Emotional intelligence
is the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions, to
discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and
actions.”
2.1.1. Emotional Intelligence Model

2
Bar-On Model. In his model, there are 5 type of emotional intelligence. They
are intrapersonal, interpersonal, adaptability, stress management and
general mood.
Goleman model. Goleman (2002:7) defines emotional intelligence as “the
capacity for recognizing our own feelings those of others, for motivating
ourselves, for managing emotions well in ourselves and in our
relationships.”
2.1.2. Speaking and type of speaking
Speaking is an interactive process of constructing meaning that involves
producing and receiving and processing information (Brown, 1994:12). It is
mean that in order to speak, someone should produce something, in this case
is the sound.
According to Brown (2004: 141-142), there are five basic types of speaking,
they are imitative, intensive, responsive, interactive, and extensive.
3. METHOD
3.1.Research Design
Every research that will be done should have method. That is why this research
also have a method. The method that will be used in this research is quantitative
metho.
3.1.1. Population and Sample.
The population on this research is students of 8 th semester of English
department of University of Pasir Pengaraian. The sample of this research is
“population sample”. It is the 8th students of English department of
University of Pasir Pengaraian which is 23 people.
3.1.2. Research Instrument
The instrument of this research is questionnaire and speaking test

4. FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

4.1. Data Analysis
The minimum score of the first rater was 50.4 And the maximum score of the first Rater
was 88.24. in the table also can be seen that the minimum score of the second rater was
50.4 and the maximum score of the second rater was 81.34. the table also show that the
minimum score of the third rater was 16.78 And the maximum score of speaking skill of
the third rater was 40.24. From the table 5 we could see that the score of speaking skills
is the total score of all of the rater. The result is calculated with the formula average in
excel.
4.1.1. Emotional Intelligence
the minimum score of the emotional intelligence of the student is 192

3
4.1.2. Linear Regression
a

1 Regression 944.520 1 944.520 289.014 .000

Residual 68.630 21 3.268

Total 1013.150 22

a. Dependent Variable: SS
b. Predictors: (Constant), EI

from the table it can be concluded that the simple linear regression is significant. can
we say that the variable X is influencing the variable Y. this significant is under 0.05
the hypothesis is accepted or there is an influence of the variables. but if the significant
number is above 0.05 the hypothesis is unaccepted.
5. CONCLUSION
After conducting the research and analyzing the data, the researchers concluded that
there was a significant effect of emotional intelligence on students' speaking skills at 8
semester students of English Department of University of Pasir Pengaraian. After
looking at the result of the data calculation in previous chapter, hypothesis(H0) was
rejected and alternative hypothesis(Ha) was accepted with the Sig 0.000<0.05. It means
that emotional intelligence has a significant influence on the speaking skills of students.
Based on the results of the data analysis, the researcher could conclude that there
was significant influence of emotional intelligence on speaking skills. Emotional
intelligence believed become one of important factors on student speaking skills. It can
be the cause of how students learn their speaking, how they practice and how motivated
they are when learning. It also shows that students with low emotional intelligence have
a lower speaking skill score while higher emotional intelligence students have higher
speaking skills’ score. Even though the speaking skill of students from all three rather
isn't high, it still shows that variable X influences variable Y.
