A BRIEF
HISTORY
OF IGWEBUIKE GRAMMAR SCHOOL, AWKA.
At that time, there were no secondary schools in the entire Awka District that
comprised the present Awka South, Awka North, Njikoka, Dunuko ia, Aguata,
Aniocha, Orumba South and Orumba North Local Government Areas. The nearest
secondary schools were Dennis Memorial Grammar School, (DMGS), Christ The
King College (CKC), Our Lady's High School, New Bethel College and Prince
Commercial School, all in Onitsha.
Because of the prevailing circumstance and the District politics then, admission to
these schools was pretty dif icult. This became a very big issue Messrs Ekweozoe
and Chine who co-opted some of their friends into a think tank to resolve this
problem, as building into a secondary school involved a huge and capital outlay
which on their own they could not afford.
The decided that the way forward was to form a cooperative as a special purpose
vehicle - composed 0f – people of like minds, friends from Nibo and Awka to raise
the fund needed for the project. They contacted the following Messrs. C.A.S.
Anueyiagu, N.D. Onuorah, B.C .Okeke, David Nwume, C.O. Dike, Katchy Ezejiokoye,
Amaku, and Chukwuma Nwobu among so many other prominent men in the two
communities to join forces in establishing a secondary school. The society was
formed and called Nigeria Social Development Society (NSDS), with the main
object clause as the establishment of a secondary school to solve the problem of
primary school leavers within the two communities and nearby towns.
Funds were quickly raised for the project without any land available. The society
then passed a resolution for one of the two communities to donate land while the
2021 IGS, AWKA BIENNIAL ALUMNI NATIONAL CONVENTION IGS | 18
other would provide the pioneer principal. This critical problem was resolved by
tossing a coin. Awka got the coin top and became responsible for the provision of
the land for the project, while Nibo was to provide the principal.
But the problem was not completely resolved, as Nibo had no quali ied person to
serve as principal. Mr. Jonas O. Onwuegbuna who was being considered for the role
held only a Cambridge School Certi icate and Higher Elementary Certi icate and
was Head Master in a school in present Delta State.
This caused some set-back and the society had no option than to send him to the
United Kingdom to study and qualify because the only university in Nigeria was
University College, Ibadan, which had limited room for admission.
Thereafter, a substitute Principal, Mr. C.J. Smart from Sierra Leone was contracted
to replace Mr. Jonas O. Onwuegbuna, as he had to travel to United Kingdom. Again
Mr. J.C. Smart was found incompetent and was ired by the Society before
resumption in 1950.
Again, this project could not take off, with the iring of Mr. J.C. Smart and the search
for a replacement was intensi ied. The information got to Mr. B.N. Chukwuogor
who was teaching at PMGS Oguta and he sought audience with the Society. He was
invited to the Annual General Meeting of the Society at Nibo on October 20, 1955,
where he advised the Society against inviting a voluntary agency to run the school.
He advised them on the way forward and offered his service to the society on the
condition that the Society will pay him the same salary he was earning at PMGS
Oguta. His proposal was accepted.
A motion for the opening of the school was moved at the same annual general
meeting by Mr. B.C. Okeke, and seconded by Mr. G.N .Nwawka and it was
unanimously decided that the Society school be of icially opened in February
1956. The work on the school commenced immediately at the land provided by
Awka with an application to the government for the necessary approvals.
Construction of houses started with classrooms and a dormitory.
The motto of Awka District Union was “IGWEBUIKE”. It was unanimously resolved
that the school be named IGWEBUIKE GRAMMAR SCHOOL, AWKA (IGS). The
School started eventually on January 9, 1958 with the admission of pioneer
students that passed out in 1962.
When the school reached Class 3, Mr. J.O. Onwuegbuna who the Society sent to
United Kingdom to obtain a university degree did not come back upon graduation
to resume as the school Principal, because the Society failed to meet his inancial
requirements during his studies in the United Kingdom. It then became
necessary to look for a graduate replacement to enable the school qualify to be
registered as a centre for West African School Certi icate Examinations.
Consequently, the Society approached the Anglican Bishop of the Niger Diocese,
Rt. Rev. C.J. Patterson, for redeployment of a graduate Principal and tutors to the
school. Thereafter Messrs. G.G. Alo and Samuel Erike were sent to the school as
Principal and tutor, respectively. Mr. G.G. Alo took over as Principal and B.N.
Chukwuogor became the Assistant Principal.
The duo were running and managing the school until Mr. Alo resigned his
appointment in August 1962 followed by in December , as both joined the staff of
newly established Colliery Secondary School at Ngwo, Enugu.
Again, Rt. Rev. Patterson graciously replaced the out gone principal in January
1963 with Mr. W.C.Z Ekweanya who remained the Principal until the out-break of
the Nigerian civil war. Mr. Ekweanya returned to the school after the war and
retired in December 1972. Mr. A.U. Nwakor replaced him.

WELCOME
A D D R E S S
BY THE NATIONAL PRESIDENT -
CHIEF SIR EMMANUEL NNAMDI NWOBU KSJI
Good afternoon distinguished Chief Guest of Honour, the Special Guest of Honour,
distinguished Chairman of this occasion, Chairman and members of the Incorporated
Trustees, our Patrons, distinguished Guests, media representatives, ladies and
Gentlemen.
Let me use this opportunity once again to also welcome special guests in our mist the
Hon. Commissioner for Basic Education Anambra State - Prof Kate Azuka Omenugha,
the Chairman of Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) - Chief
Patrick Ugbaja, the Chairman of IGSOBA Incorporated Trustees - Evangelist Jasper
Azado and other members of our Incorporated Trustees who willingly accepted to be
part of this year's National convention and who are always ready to contribute selflessly
to its formant and content. Your show of love, continued interest and support in the
development of our alma mater is second to none. We are indeed very appreciative and
delighted to have you.
As a tradition, we have sought for a convention theme that is relevant and impacting on
the lives of our members and the rest of IGS family. We came up with ONWARD
TOGETHER. Onward Together, we make our alma mater better. At this juncture, I
will like to quote N.R. Narayana Murthy, an Indian IT industrialist, who wrote on
June 22, 2017 that “Nobody is bothered about an Institution more than its alumni”. In
any Institution, alumni are the key to its growth. Our actions today are all about
intervention to make our Alma mater great as in Onward Together.
As you may recall that this is the third epochal event under my watch as the National
President of this association. The first was the marking of 60th Anniversary celebration
of the college held in October 2018, while the second was the National Convention held
in 2019. We all worked tirelessly with great passion in moving the IGS legacy forward.
Bravo to you all; you are the best.
far cry from the orientation in the early years of the old boys association. This is our resolve and
our guiding spirit; a simple way of paying back the debt of gratitude we owe the college that
contributed immensely to what we are today. We will continue to plant trees with zeal so that
future generations will eat fruits as good as if not better than the fruits earlier generations ate
from the trees planted by our founding fathers. Again, we hope to pass this passion to the present
and future students of IGS.
Distinguished guests, I want to thank my fellow old boys for their tireless, relentless and ongoing
efforts to bring our alma mater to another crest of recognition. Since 2017, the atmosphere at our
alma mater has been thick with our actions and achievements, as I will reel out shortly.
a) Donation of a complete set of musical Band and 80 branded College blazers with ties to
the school.
b) Construction of the Legacy gate, planting of ornamental trees with flowers and
landscaping of the premises, commissioned on the 27th October 2018 during the 60th
Anniversary Ceremony.
c) Registration of the association with Awka South Local government Authority and
Corporate Affairs Commission, Abuja.
d) Celebration of the 60th Year Anniversary ceremony with legacy projects commissioned
with awards to members.
f) Attracted a Laboratory Science kits for Junior Secondary School from Federal Ministry
of Science and Technology through a worthy old boy, Chief Kenneth Onwumbiko of
great class of 1979.
j) Started and completed perimeter fencing project with the concreting of the Legacy Gate
floor.
k) Through the efforts of the Great Class of 1979 and a worthy old boy – Patrick Chibuogu
Nwezi, two classroom blocks were renovated and commissioned in 2020.
n) Attraction of the renovation of our first one storey building that was on the verge of
collapsing and Science Laboratory building by Anambra State Universal Basic
Education Board (ASUBEB).
o) The renovated SS3 Classroom block by the Awka Union USA and Canada (Los Angeles
Chapter) that was commissioned and handed over to the school yesterday.
p) Finally, the ongoing renovation of the Administrative Block that will be commissioned
in December 2021.
Your Excellency, chairman of the occasion, ladies and gentlemen, your presence in this
gathering and generosity will surely help to support the on-going renovation project and thereby
bring us closer to achieving the theme of this convention, “Onward Together”. To the old boys,
let us not ignore our key roles as stakeholder in the sustenance of the college, as our intervention
is a continuous process, which revolves from generation to generation.
To this effect, I would continue thanking you all for your unalloyed support that has made our
almost two terms in office very glorious. It is a clear demonstration of LOVE as enshrined in our
MOTTO: PRO AMORE ET' VERITATE, and also as a testimony to the fact that the College has
produced very responsible people with good hearts.
I sincerely wish to thank the Hon. Commissioner of Basic Education - Prof. Kate Azuka
Omenugha, and her team for their wonderful support to this great Association. And to others, I
especially enjoin you to join hands in continuously making IGS Awka a better school.
As a solemn pledge, it is our mission to make our modest contributions towards the restoration
and preservation of our college. This is the very least we can do to this great institution that has
given us an exceptional education and the privilege of being part of this IGS family that others
can only dream and wish to belong.
In conclusion, I will end with a quote from Helen Keller, the American blind and deaf woman
who in her scholastic biography in April 1, 1989 wrote that, “Optimism is the faith that leads
to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence”. No word can be
sufficient enough to express the depth of my heartfelt gratitude for the team spirit in this our
intervention journey, as I remain eternally grateful to you all.
Thank you for being part of our story. I wish everyone a most successful happy convention and
journey mercies back to base as this year's Convention is all about rekindle of old memories, ties,
telling of old jokes, charting a new agenda, celebration of our successes and of course
fundraising for our on-going Administrative block renovation project.
Intervention Continues!
Three old boys have been nominated for this award. The best among the three will
receive The IGSOBA Champion plaque.
b. The Best-In-Class Award
Igwebuike Grammar School, Awka, has an enviable long list of graduated classes,
which is not surprising, given the age of the institution. But the classes are not all
equally committed to the IGSOBA cause. Some classes have shown positive
consistency in their disposition to matters of the alma mater, and many have not. There
has been a surprising turn of events in some instances, with some least-expected
2021 IGS, AWKA BIENNIAL ALUMNI NATIONAL CONVENTION IGS | 27
classes emerging as the new and enviable face of IGSOBA and our alma mater, giving
generously to works of the alma mater. Some classes are more represented in IGSOBA
than others... with more financial members.
The Best-In-Class award considers the performance of the classes in the important
areas of giving back to the alma mater, number of registered members in IGSOBA
register, and class participation in alumni activities. Three classes have been
nominated for this award. The winner will receive and hold the IGSOBA Ambassador
Trophy until the next National Convention.
c. The Best IGSOBA Branch Award
Alumni of Igwebuike Grammar School, Awka, are spread across the globe and could
be found in diverse professional callings and vocations. IGSOBA seeks to harness the
networking opportunities inherent in this spread, for a dynamic and extensive alumni
network. The branches are important vehicles for mobilising members. They also
represent an important voice in the governance of the association, including being a
window for leadership recruitment. Some branches outperform others in their
organisation, the vibrancy of their activities and general contribution to the
programmes and projects of the national body. IGSOBA aspires to have branches in as
many locations as possible.
Mobilising members for branch activities is tasking. This award segment recognises
the success of branches that scaled the hurdles to the formation and sustenance of a
branch, while at once offering giving IGSOBA and the alma mater benefit of branch
resources.
Three branches have been nominated for this award. The winner will receive and hold
the IGSOBA Magellan (Ojemba) Trophy until the next National Convention.
d. The Benefactor Award
Support for alumni activities is not a one-off engagement. Also, it is not about being the
best in one area of activity. The alumni association desires to have members that will
always be there to support its activities, come rain or come shine, providing moral,
intellectual, financial, and spiritual support as the need arises. Members with this
attribute do not come in large numbers, even as we strive to grow the population.
The IGSOBA Patron Award is for those members that have demonstrated the energy
and uncommon flair to attend to multiple needs of the alumni association in a way that
elevates the association, propelling it to greater attainments. Three persons have been
nominated for this award. The winner will receive a certificate and letter of gratitude
from IGSOBA.

Appreciation
We gladly extend appreciations to all who honored the convention with their
distinguished presence that added lively interaction and glamour to the gathering.
Special thanks go to IGSOBA National Executive led by Chief Sir Nnamdi Nwobu for
his visionary leadership and drive, the Convention organising Committee Chairman
for direction and effective coordination, the Principal, Staff and Students of IGSA for
sustainability. Special thanks also go to the classes, branches and generously dynamic
old boys of IGSA, whose financial muscles gallantly funded the convention to
fruition.
The academic colorations added to the convention by the Keynote Speakers: Dr. Okey
Anueyiagu (USA) and Prof Meshach Umenweke (UNIZIK) was intellectually
challenging and knowledge loaded.
Finally, we joyfully give the Almighty God, all glory and adoration for the wisdom in
the choice of the Convention Theme : “ONWARD TOGETHER” We Shall Make Our
Alma mater Great”. The unity of purpose which constituted the driving force behind
our success story in this convention bears eloquent testimony to the truism of the
theme and of the unction to function bestowed from above.
We pray for God's traveling mercies on all participants of the convention as they return
to their respective destinations.
