A.Background of Course

This course is a compulsory for undergraduate student in the middle semester. In this course
students are expected to have a basic knowledge in learning English and using English in their
academic activities focused on speaking. English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is also designed
for students in academic programs who need a more general introduction to authentic academic
content. The discrete skills are designed for programs and courses that want to more intensively
focus on key strategies and these activities are presented within the context of one field of
academic study content in Anthropology as one of skill area. The learning program is designed to
help students to have academic writing skills and reading anthropology literature which is printed
in English version.

B. Lesson Plan

1. Course short description After taking the EAP, students are able to communicate in English,
read textbooks and express their thoughts in written. Students are exposed in Universitas Negeri
Medan classroom culture and take part in campus activities on a regular basis throughout the EAP
program

2. Course Purpose Significant instruction time is dedicated to developing academic English

reading, writing, grammar, listening, speaking, and vocabulary skills, and strategies necessary for
success in college and university coursework in English.

3. Learning Outcomes and Expected Competences After taking this course, students are expected
to: a) Apply quick reading techniques. Read English written textbooks of related subjects this
semester b) Write scientifically based on flow chart, diagram or table c) Have vocabulary
buildings especially in Anthropology
