In your own locale, interview an individual (an experienced any form

of cancer and ask him/her about his/her experiences. Later on, as you
will be reading this module, correlate the results of your interview to
the concepts being discussed in the module. The more cancer patients
you can interview or the more cancer survivor you can interview, the
deeper is your understanding on the concept of cellular aberration.

Search on the net, particularly on YouTube, download stories/ testimonies of cancer survivors
around the world. How do the testimonies of Filipino clients (the one you recently interviewed)
differ from the modalities of treatments around the world? If possible, concentrate on the following
countries: Russia, USA, Germany, China and Thailand.

After watching the testimonies, try to answer the following questions?

1. What is common among cancer survivors?

Cancer is a disease in which some of the body's cells grow uncontrollably and
spread to other parts of the body. Cancer can start almost anywhere in the human body,
which is made up of trillions of cells. A person who had a history of cancer is commonly
called as a “cancer survivor”.
What cancer survivors have in common is that they are all fighting against certain
cancer diseases; breast cancer, dual lung cancer, prostate cancer, and the so-called leading
cancer, namely lung cancer. And as I watched the testimonies, I also noticed that are all
very strong on handling the situation that they were into. They might feel the fear of dying
because of their illness but they didn’t give up and they manage to survive from cancer.
They manage to survive because of the help of their brilliant doctors which treated them so
well. And after surviving from cancer, I have noticed that they appreciate life more than
before.

2. What kind of struggles did they went through?

Cancer is a very dangerous illness and it is the leading cause of death worldwide.
Having cancer is very tough which may lead cancer patients to be in a roller coaster ride
of emotions.
As stated from the testimonies I have watched, after knowing about their disease,
some of them are nervous and confused about the situation, someone breakdown from tears
and there’s someone who don’t know how to tell her family about her illness. Struggles
that the cancer survivors from the testimony videos are more about their emotional state.
But, despite of the situation and all those emotional baggage that they are into, they still
manage to think positively and fight for their life.
3. How were they able to survive from cancer?
The cancer survivors were able to survive from their illness because of their family,
friends and especially the hospital and healthcare team who took care of them from their
entire battle from the disease.
Their family and friends who never stop on supporting and taking care of them,
their family who never stop from giving constant attention and love to them. Who always
stick by their side no matter what happens and who always give them joy and happiness
despite of their situation. Their family and friends who became their active listeners
regarding on what they feel, which is a very good help for them.
And most importantly, the hospital and healthcare team, they are the ones who took
care of their cancer patients, who gave advice and excellent patient care. Those cancer
survivors from the testimonies were able to survive because of them. The healthcare team
told them the right thing to do and what should be done in order to survive from the disease.
They took care of them staring from the diagnosis, the biopsy, chemotherapy and surgeries
and many more treatments that have been done. Of course, they survived cancer because
of undergoing through some procedures and treatments with the help of their healthcare
team.

4. What were the different modalities used in the treatment of their specific cancer?

I have watched every video that is given to us and upon watching them one by one,
I also heard about different modalities used to treat specific cancers. In the first video,
which is the story of Bill, he undergoes to a biopsy and found out that he has two tumors
on his brain, a cancerous tumor on his liver and also a lung cancer. And because of his
situation, we went through and undergo two brain surgeries to other Gamma Knife
surgeries and have been to seven different chemo medications. In the second video which
is the story of a Dual Lungs Survivor, he was found to have lung cancer, so they decided
to remove it. Unfortunately, they later saw a discovery that both lungs had cancer. Cutting-
edge treatment was used as a modality to treat his cancer. Through aggressive
chemotherapy and radiotherapy, it shrunk the patients’ tumors the remove a lobe of each
lung using an advance surgical procedure.

The third is the story of a Breast Cancer Survivor who was found in the early stages
of breast cancer. However, she has a high risk of recurrence, not because of her cancer,
because of aggressiveness of that cancer type which is Triple Breast Cancer Her doctor
now says that there is a certain chance; the cure rate is 70% in any treatment she can receive,
10% for active chemotherapy, and another 5% in clinical trials. She received a medication,
Taxol, which have the mechanism of action of that was discovered by dr. Susan Harwick's
in 1979. And the last testimony video, the story of the Prostate Cancer Survivor. The patient
has undergone into a Robotic prostatectomy. His doctor also said that robotic
prostatectomy is a less invasive technique in which removing the prostate through small
incisions.
