IV. What’s New?

Festival is a period of program, of festive activities, cultural events and

entertainment. In the Philippines, festivals are religious in nature, although some
regions uphold their distinct culture. Musical instruments like drums, gong, lyre
and other instruments are used to makes the celebration lively.
In music, improvisation of musical accompaniment is a way of
adding creativity to the song. It is practiced by some of the highly
respected individuals in the industry. Improvisation of musical
accompaniment also helps to explore sounds and to create beautiful and
unique music. There are steps on how to improvise musical
accompaniment. Some of this are the following:
1. play along on a musical instrument
2. get creative with melody
3. get creative with rhythm
4. embrace musical accidents
In every festival parade, participants play drums or other instruments in
rhythmical patterns as their music during processions and parades.
Localized materials or any materials available at home like cans, empty
bottles, metals etc, can also be use as musical instruments in improvisation.
The picture below is a musical score used in Ati-atihan Festival. It shows
rhythmic patterns accompanied by localized or improvised musical instruments.

5
Theater Arts in the Philippines started in 16th century. These includes
Komedya (Secular Komedya and Religious Komedya), Sarsuela and Bodabil.
Komedya is play written in verse which uses march for entrance and exit.
Sarsuela is play in prose or sometimes in poetry accompanied by song
and dances.

“Walang Sugat” is an example of Sarsuela and is written by

Severino Reyes, the “Father of Filipino Drama”. The story of “Walang
Sugat” portrays the typical Filipino stories, realities and social relation
were audiences can relate as to marriage, family, politics, feast, vices and
values.
"Walang Sugat" tells the love story of Julia and Tenyong whose
forbidden relationship had been obstructed by their social status, political,
and religious beliefs during the peak of the Philippine revolutionary
movement against the colonization of the Spaniards in 1896-1898.

“WALANG SUGAT”
By Severino Reyes
(UNANG YUGTO)

Koro : Ang karayom kung iduro

Ang daliri’y natitibo,
Kapag namali ng duro
Burda nama’y lumiliko

Julia : Anong dikit, anong inam

Ng panyong binuburdahan,
Tatlong letrang nag-agapay
Na kay Tenyong na pangalan.

Koro : Ang karayom kung itirik

tumutimo hanggang dibdib.

Julia : Piyesta niya’y kung sumipot

Pannyong ito’y iaabot,
Kalakip ang puso’t loob,
Ng kaniyang tunay na lingkod.
Si Tenyong ay mabibighani
Sa dikit ng pagkagawa
Mga kulay na sutla,
Asul, puti at pula.

Panyo’t dito ka sa dibdib,

Sabihin sa aking ibig
Na ako’y nagpapahatid
Isang matunog na halik.

Koro : Ang karayom kung iduro

Ang daliri’y natitibo.
Hoy tingnan ninyo si Julia
Pati panyo’y sinisinta,
Kapag panyo ng ibig
Tinatapos ng pilit
Nang huwag daw mapulaan
Ng binatang pagbibigyan:
Ang panyo pa’y sasamahan
Ng mainam na pagmamahal.

7
At ang magandang pag-ibig
Kapag namugad sa dibdib
Nalilimutan ang sakit
. .
Tuwa ang gumugiit.

Mga irog natin naman

Sila’y pawang paghandugan
Mga panyong mainam
Iburda ang kanilang pangalan.

Julia : Piyesta niya’y kung sumipot

Panyong ito’y iaabot
Kalakip ang puso’t loob
Ng kaniyang tunay na lingkod.

Koro : Nang huwag daw mapulaan
