I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT
Can you imagine our world without sound? Without sound life would be dull
and meaningless. Sound helps us to communicate with one another and with other
life forms. It also helps us to relax and express our ideas, thoughts, and beliefs.

In your Grade 4 lesson, you have learned that sound is a type of energy which
is produced by the vibrations of particles. You also learned how sound
travels/propagates in a medium. In this learning packet, you will learn how
temperature affects the speed of sound.

II. LEARNING SKILLS FROM THE MELC

MELC: Investigate the effect of temperature to the speed of sound.
Objectives:
1. Explain how temperature affects the speed of sound.

III. ACTIVITIES
A. Elicit

Let us recall what you have learned in your previous grade level
about sound. Read each statement carefully. Write “FACT” if the
statement is correct and write “BLUFF” if the statement is incorrect.

STATEMENT FACT
OR
BLUFF?
1. Sound is an example of longitudinal wave.
2. Sound is a carrier of energy.
3. Sound is produced by a vibrating object.
4. Sound does not need a medium to propagate.
5. The arrangement of particles in solid, liquid and gas affect
the speed of sound.

B. Engage

Let's consider the conversation between two Grade 8 students

named Alex and Shine. Read their conversation and come-up with an
idea on which time of the day Alex’s mother can hear better and why?
Write your answer at the space provided below.

ACTIVITY: FASTER SOUND … in Hotter or Cooler?

In this activity, you are going to analyze the picture below and
explain how temperature affects the speed of sound.

Guide Questions:
1. What is the speed of sound when temperature is at 45°C? ______________
2. What is the speed of sound when temperature is at -1°C? ______________
3. What happens to the speed of sound when temperature increases?
decreases?

D. Explain

Now, give yourself enough time to read the concepts about how
temperature affects the speed of sound. It will help you clarify answers
from the previous activity.

SPEED OF SOUND

Sound waves can only move through matter – solids, liquids, and
gases. This is the reason why you can hear a conversation on the other side of
a room even if there is a solid barrier like wall in between. Marine mammals
like dolphins communicate by sending sound waves through water. When you
speak, the sound waves travel through air.

The speed of sound does not depend on the source but on the medium
through which they move. We can change the speed of sound if we change the
medium or the properties of the medium that the sound is travelling in. Thus,
the speed of sound is different in solids, liquids, and gases. Several factors
affect the speed of sound as it travels through a medium. The speed of sound
is also affected by these factors: temperature, humidity, and density.

When the temperature gets high,

particles have more kinetic energy and
thus, vibrate faster. Since sound is a
consequence of energy transfer through
collisions, the more they collide means
faster sound.
In your previous activity, it shows
how the speed of sound is also
dependent on temperature of the
medium. When the temperature is higher,
the speed of sound is faster. When the Source:http://cikguwong.blogspot.com/2011/03
temperature becomes lower, its /physics-form-5-chapter-1-refraction-of.html
molecules moves slower so they collide
less frequently compared to a medium or body with a higher temperature thus
sound travels slower.
Sound waves travel faster through warm air than through cool air. At
0°C, sound travels at a speed of 331.5 m/s. The speed of sound increases, as

4
RO_Science_Grade 8_Q1_LP 3
the temperature of air rises. In liquids and solids, where molecules are close
together, temperature has less effect on the speed of sound.

E. Elaborate

Sound travels faster in warmer air. During the day, the sun heats the earth's
surface (ground). Thus sound travels faster in the air near the ground, which causes
the sound wave to refract upward. At night, the opposite happens. The sound further
from the ground travels faster at night, causing the sound wave to refract towards the
earth's surface.

Now, that you already understand how temperature affects the

speed of sound, let’s recall the conversation of Alex and Shine earlier
and answer the question below.
Do you think Alex’s mom can hear better at night than in day?
Explain your answer.

F. Extend

To extend your understanding about how temperature affects the

speed of sound, let’s answer the activity given below.

To compute for the speed of sound in air at a given temperature, consider the
equation below.

` where:

v = speed of sound in air at a particular

temperature (in m/s)
T = temperature of the atmosphere (in °C)

Sample Problem: Calculate the speed of sound in air at 10°C.

For sample no. 1, since the given temperature is 10°C, substitute this value of
temperature into the equation above.

Now, it’s your turn. Calculate for the speed of sound in air at room temperature
(25°C). Show your solution in the box below.
