➔ USE:
1. HABITS/ ROUTINES: I always go to school on foot.
2. STATIVE VERBS: They don’t like how the teacher explains./ You look sad.
3. UNIVERSAL TRUTHS: Water boils at 100º.

➔ TIME EXPRESSIONS: always, sometimes, often, never, usually, seldom; every + x;


on + x; twice a week, once a month.

➔ EXAMPLES:
Do you fancy a cup of tea? Yes, I do/ No, I don’t.

➔ USE:
1. ACTION HAPPENING NOW AT THE MOMENT OF SPEAKING: She is listening
to music right now.

➔ TIME EXPRESSIONS: right now, at the moment, now, these days, this + x.

➔ EXAMPLES:
I can’t talk right now. I’m brushing my teeth.
He is training hard these days.

➔ USE:
1. FOCUSED ON THE RESULT OF THE ACTIVITY: I have written you an email.
2. FINISHED ACTIONS: The children have played for two hours.
3. VERBS AS BELIEVE, KNOW, UNDERSTAND, LIKE/DISLIKE, BELONG, OWN (not
its continuous form)
4. CAUSE-CONSEQUENCE: I have lost my keys, so now I can’t open the door.

➔ TIME EXPRESSIONS: never, ever, already, just, yet, how long, several times, since
(beginning), for (duration), lately/ recently, today, this morning
➔ EXAMPLES:
I’ve known John since we were at university.
Have you ever met a celebrity? Actually, I’ve just met one.

PAST UNTIL NOW): I have been writing emails for hours.
2. UNFINISHED ACTIONS: The children have been playing for two hours.
3. RECENT ACTION: She has been working on her dissertation recently.

➔ TIME EXPRESSIONS: recently, already, just, yet, how long, several times, since
(beginning), for (duration), this + x..

➔ EXAMPLES:
How long have you been reading that book? I’d say for about two weeks.
My clothes are covered in paint. I have been painting the fence.
