“I shall not live in Vain”

I. Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, the students must have:

 Experienced and then demonstrated an awareness of poetry by focusing on the


text only.
 Experienced the value of reading and understanding a text in a personal way.

III. Procedure:

Pre-reading
Warm-Up Activity
 For the warm-up activity of the lesson, the teacher will show pictures of
Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and Johns Hopkins.
 The teacher then will ask the students what is the common characteristics that
these people have in their lifetime.
 The teacher then will let the students share their observations and ideas about
the picture.
An-Open-Letter-To Activity

 The students will be tasked to write an open letter to the most selfless person or
the most selfish person they have ever come across to (it could be anyone).
 Before starting the activity, the teacher reminds the learners that the letters will
not be read in the classroom. Hence, the learners do not feel intimidated while
writing and may include even confessions about their own past experiences.
During-Reading:

 The teacher will now introduce the poem, “I shall not live in Vain” by Emily
Dickinson.
 The teacher will ask the students to read the poem altogether and out loud.
 The teacher goes on with the “efferent reading” phase and will task the
learners to write their own interpretation of the poem by identifying its
persona, tone, and theme (This stage aims to guide learners about the
identification of the main features of the poem. However, learners will not
share the details yet of their findings as learning different ideas on setting and
situation might change participants’ own views and concentrate on others’.)
 The students shall follow the following guidelines:
 1st Paragraph: Discuss who is the speaker in the poem (support your claims
through the extract/s of the poem)
 2nd Paragraph: Discuss the tone of the poem (support your claims through the
extract/s of the poem).
 3rd Paragraph: Discuss the theme of the poem (support your claims through the
extract/s of the poem).
 The students then will be grouped into two (2).
 Each group will be given a time to discuss their findings about the theme of the
poem based on the individual interpretation they have written.
 Then one (1) group representative will be tasked to discuss their group findings
in the class.
Post-Reading
Activity 1

 Given with the theme discussed in the class, the students will be tasked to make
their own two-stanza poem with the following criteria:

Creativity 10 pts.
Originality 10 pts.
Word Mechanics 15 pts.
Relevance to the Topic 15 pts.
TOTAL 50 pts.
