Title: UNIFORM ACCELERATION ON AN INCLINED PLANE

Objective: To study the motion of a body moving down an inclined plane.

Apparatus: Calibrated inclined plane; millisecond timer; toy car

Introduction:
The average speed v of a body is the quotient of the distance, which is traverses, and
time t required to travel the distance. In symbols, v S / t.
When the velocity of the body varies, its motion is said to be accelerated. Acceleration
defined as the time rate of change of velocity. In symbols, a (V2 — VI) / t.
If a body moves in a straight line, making equal changes of speed in equal intervals of time
its acceleration is constant and is said to be moving with uniformly accelerated motion. This is
the type of motion produced when a constant net Force, parallel to the, direction of motion, acts
upon the body.
For uniformly accelerated motion the average speed is the arithmetic mean of the initial ant
final speeds. Note that this statement holds true only because the acceleration is uniform. For am
other type of accelerated motion the arithmetic average of the speeds does not give the average
value. For uniformly accelerated motion.
S: (VI + V2)/2 x t; but V2-V1 at; s=VI + at^2 /2

Procedures:

1. Set up the calibrated plane using a small angle of inclination allowing the toy car
to accelerate uniformly when moving downward through the plane.
2. Position the photo detector A at the 10.0 cm mark and connect it to the millisecond
timer. Position photo detector B at the 20.0 cm mark and connect it to the millisecond timer.
3. Place the toy car near the top of the incline at the 10.0 cm mark. Reset the millisecond
timer and release the toy car allowing it to run freely downward.
4. Record the time of travel when it reaches the 20.0 cm mark. Repeat procedure 3
times to take the average time of travel.
5. Position the photo detector B at the 30.0 cm mark and replace the toy car at the 10.0 cm
mark. Reset the timer and release the toy car. Record and repeat this procedure WIice to take the
average time of travel.
6. For the successive trials, position the photo detector B at 10.0 cm interval and take three
measurements of time each interval. Make a total of six 10.0-cm distance interval.
