1. What are the different types of centrifugal pumps? Discuss each briefly.

a. Based on the number of impellers

b. Based on impeller suction

c. Based on type of volute

d. Based on nozzle location

2. What are the different types of centrifugal pumps? Discuss each briefly.

a. Based on shaft orientation

b. Based on orientation of case – split

c. Based on bearing support and

d. Based on shaft connection to driver.

1.
a. Single stage - commonly used in pumping services of high flow and low to
moderate TDH (Total Dynamic Head).
Two-stage - has two impellers operating side by side which are used for medium
head applications.
Multi-stage - has three or more impellers in series, for high head service.
b. Single suction - allows fluid to enter the blades only through one side.
Double suction - allows fluid to enter from both sides of the blades and has lower
NPSHR than a single suction impeller.
c. Single volute - used in small low-capacity pumps, have higher radial loads.
Double volute - has two partial volutes which are located 180 degrees apart
resulting in balanced radial loads.
d. The nozzle location can be of end suction top discharge, top suction top
discharge, or side suction side discharge.
2.
a. Horizontal - These are pumps with the shaft the in horizontal plane, popular
due to ease of servicing and maintenance.
Vertical - have their shaft in the vertical plane, They utilize a unique shaft and
bearing support configuration that allows the volute to hang in the sump while
the bearings are outside the sump.
b. Axial split - volute casing is split axially and the split line at which the pump
casing separates is at the shaft’s centerline.
Radial split - pump case is split radially; the volute casing split is
perpendicular to the shaft centerline.
c. Overhung - impeller is mounted on the end of a shaft, supported by bearings
on only one side.
Between-bearing - impeller is mounted on a shaft that has bearing support on
both ends, thus impeller is located in between-bearings.
d. Variety of drivers include electric motor, engine, and turbine (steam, gas or
power recovery hydraulic turbine)
